De Goddaughter wins Luther Burbank

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Favored De Goddaughter ($4), a wire-to-wire winner in her previous start, sat behind Rosanda and Pheiffer early before taking command in the stretch to win the $43,140 Luther Burbank Handicap on Sunday at the Sonoma County Fair.

De Goddaughter won the 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old and up fillies and mares by one length over fast-closing Miss Terasita in 1:43.49.

"She's cool," winning rider Jason Lumpkins said. "If I found myself in front, that would have been OK, but there were a couple in there with some game. I knew (Rosanda's jockey Alfredo) Miranda likes the lead, and that other one (Pheiffer, who finished third) was coming out of a sprint.

"I just sat behind them, moved up into the stretch, and the last 16th, she held on well."

De Goddaughter has won six of 21 starts and earned $201,288.
