22-1 shot Hillexotic and 2-5 favorite Jiggy Jog S took Saturday night's $250,000 Dayton Oaks Derby for fillies and mares and Dayton Trotting Derby for stallions and geldings at Hollywood Gaming Dayton Raceway. It was another clash between It's Academic (David Miller) and Alrajah One (Dexter Dunn) in the Dayton Trotting Derby, but Hillexotic (Yannick Gingras) knocked off both of them in a track record clocking of 1:51 1/5. Rail starter and 75-1 shot Kildare King (Aaron Merriman) launched through from the pole position to the point in a 27 1/5 quarter, but Miller had It's Academic rolling from third past that marker and took the lead in the homestretch the first time around. Behind him, Hillexotic sat in the pocket and then the three-hole while Alrajah One was able to tuck into fourth ahead of Lovedbythemasses (Todd McCarthy). It's Academic reached the half in 54 3/5, and it would be beyond that point that Dunn sent Alrajah One first-over. After being fed racetrack, Alrajah One made gains towards It's Academic to three-quarters in 1:22 3/5 and sustained his bid on the final bend to get onto even terms with It's Academic. Meanwhile, Lovedbythemasses couldn't keep up to the cover, allowing Gingras plenty of space to slip to the outside with Hillexotic late on the turn. Alrajah One and It's Academic traded blows the length of the Dayton stretch, and late in the mile it looked like Alrajah One had his measure, but Hillexotic had enough time and enough trot to get past the pair of them approaching the wire, defeating Alrajah One by a head. It's Academic had to settle for third, followed by Kildare King and Southwind Tyrion (Ake Svanstedt). "It was definitely exciting. They went at it pretty hard there the first half. I was part of it going to the first turn, but I got a good trip from there, and then was lucky to be able to squeeze out," Gingras offered. "He's been really good actually. At Yonkers last time, it was just a troubled trip. He was out the whole way, mile and a quarter, so it wasn't really his fault. Every other start he's been right there. Of course, Alrajah One, he's just getting back into shape, and he had a pretty tough trip, so we capitalized on that. "This horse, he's just a sweetheart. He's great to drive. I really like this horse. I race him all the time at Yonkers and in these races, too. He's just a perfect horse. The only problem is I don't own a piece of him. I'd like to own that one." Ron Burke trains Hillexotic, a 6-year-old Muscle Hill gelding, for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC., Weaver Bruscemi LLC. and Phil Collura. He has a summary of 24-18-6 from 65 lifetime appearances, has now put away $967,701 and returned $46.80 to win. ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter In the Dayton Oaks Derby, Jiggy Jog S (Dunn) was able to slide down into fifth from post seven while pole-sitter Forceful Power (Sandy Beatty) drove through from post one and hit the quarter in 27 3/5. Meanwhile, M-M's Dream (D. Miller), coming off a win in the Miss Versatility Series final at the Delaware County Fairgrounds last Thursday, floated out from the far outside post nine and wound up three-wide on the first turn, then drove on two-wide to take over the top spot en route to the 56 2/5 half-mile marker. Past the half, 65-1 shot HP Mama B (Louis-Philippe Roy) stepped out first-over from the fourth spot, and she would provide ideal cover to follow for Jiggy Jog S as HP Mama B advanced to within half a length of M-M's Dream at the 1:24 4/5 three-quarters. M-M's Dream continued on the front-end around the final bend while HP Mama B continued to pester her on the rim and Dunn fired Jiggy Jog S three-wide. M-M's Dream was game and turned for home first, but Jiggy Jog S was full of trot three-wide and would rally past M-M's Dream in the stretch. From there, Jiggy Jog S had it all to herself as she pulled clear to score by a pair of lengths in 1:52 3/5. M-M's Dream held on to get second, and HP Mama B overcame the uncovered journey to collect a nice third-place result. Forceful Power and Warrawee Xenia (Tim Tetrick) completed the top five. "M-M's Dream has had my number a couple of times, but my mare is a great mare. David got around us in the first turn and probably had an advantage, but I got a good trip after that, and down the straight she really showed what she can do," said Dunn. "She's a very versatile mare, and she can do it on the front or off a helmet. She's got a good turn of foot, so Louis's horse gave me a great drag into it. I was really happy going down the backstretch, and like I said, she's a great mare." A 4-year-old daughter of Walner, Jiggy Jog S is trained by Ake Svanstedt for owner Jorgen Sparredal Inc. This was her 15th win from 32 career starts, she has now earned $1,871,279 and paid $2.80 to win.
