Day Trader wins Matt Winn

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Day Trader stayed closest to a wicked pace, then went on to capture the inaugural running of the $109,600 Matt Winn Stakes on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

Day Trader, owned by Overbrook Farm and trained by D. Wayne Lukas, paid $12 as the fourth choice in the Matt Winn, a newly created, six-furlong race for 3-year-olds.

Cojet set a torrid pace of 20.85 and 44.02 seconds, but Day Trader, ridden by Calvin Borel, overtook him in the upper stretch. Day Trader went on to finish 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Medlin Road, while Still Be Smokin' was another 1 1/4 lengths back in third.

Saturday Hero, the 8-5 favorite finished, fourth, followed by Cojet, Richest Half, and Laffit. Major Focus was an early scratch.

Day Trader, a $130,000 yearling purchase, now has won three of seven starts. He finished in 1:09.43 over a fast track.

Earlier Saturday, trainer Lynn Whiting had his six-race win streak snapped when Missme narrowly failed to hold off Sharp Gold in the second race.

Also, jockey James Lopez was diagnosed with a hairline fracture of the left wrist after being spilled from All Purpose in the fifth race.
