Dancing Squall gives Veltmann second stakes win

Clyde Veltmann, who returned to training this past spring following a 30-year hiatus, won his second stakes this year when Dancing Squall captured the $68,000 Zia Park Distaff at 18-1 on Sunday. She won by eight lengths over Fun'ngames Toknite, who finished 1 1/2 lengths in front of third-place finisher Ladysgotthelooks.

Dancing Squall ($38) raced in fifth early, as Sandia's Flicka set fractions of 22.40 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.80 for the half-mile mark. Dancing Squall overtook the pacesetter soon afterward, and powered through the stretch, covering the six furlong-race for fillies and mares in 1:10.60.

Manual Montano rode the winner for Veltmann, whose other stakes winner this year was Majestic Stream in the $40,000 Ruidoso Handicap. Dancing Squall earned $40,800 for the win, which was her third from 11 starts. She has now earned $65,710.

Dancing Squall races for Veltmann's wife, Diantha Veltmann.
