Daily handle up 2 percent; Gardipy, Moccasin repeat


SASKATOON, Saskatchewan - Marquis Downs concluded its 29-day meeting here last Saturday with a gain of about 2 percent in average daily ontrack handle compared to last year. Total ontrack handle came to $868,657, for a daily average of $29,954.

Marquis Downs does not export its signal, and no attendance figures are kept.

Trainer Russell Gardipy and jockey Tim Moccasin repeated as the leading trainer and jockey at the meeting.

Gardipy was the top trainer in both races and money won, with 31 wins and earnings of $112,231. Judy Hunter was next with 18 wins, and Wendy Anderson was third with 17.

Although he missed the first month of the season, Moccasin won with 38 of his 137 mounts. Neville Stephenson was next with 27 wins, and Niam Samaroo was third with 25.

The meet's leading owner was Gabriel Road Stables, with earnings of $75,450 from 27 victories.

J.C.'s Action went 3 for 3 in his juvenile campaign as he won three stakes races, including the $25,000 Prairie Lily Sales, and earned $33,000 to be the meet's leading money winner. Delineator's Dream won 5 of his 7 starts to earn the title of winningest horse at the meet.
