Curtain Call heads Lingfield Derby

Curtain Call, the second favorite for the Epsom Derby, will have his final prep for the June 7 classic on Saturday in the 1 7/16-mile Lingfield Derby Trial, a Group 3 contest worth $117,000. A Sadler's Wells colt trained by Luca Cumani, Curtain Call won the one-mile Group 2 Beresford Stakes when trained by Jessica Harrington last fall. He started his 3-year-old campaign with a six-length score in a three-runner, 1 1/4-mile conditions race at Nottingham on April 23.

Campanologist, transferred by the Maktoum family to Godolphin after winning the listed 1 1/8-mile Feilden Stakes at Newmarket last month for trainer Mark Johnston, will be ridden by Frankie Dettori.

* Thursday at Chester, Doctor Fremantle vaulted from a second-place finish in a Newmarket handicap to win the Group 3, $126,000 Chester Vase. Trained by Michael Stoute for Juddmonte Farms, Doctor Fremantle (6-5) outgamed All the Aces by a half-length, getting the 1 1/2 miles, 66 yards in 2:37.39. Not nominated to the Epsom Derby, Doctor Fremantle will run in the Irish Derby on June 29.

Earlier, Championship Point denied Maraahel a fourth consecutive victory in the $117,000 Group 3 Huxley Stakes, coming again for a neck victory. Trained by Michael Channon, Championship Point (12-1) covered the 1 1/4 miles, 75 yards in 2:11.21.
