The Curragh: Maybe has beaten most she will face in Moyglare Stud Stakes

Email

Six fillies entered in the Moyglare Stud Stakes on Sunday at The Curragh in Ireland share a common trait: All have been beaten by Maybe, the undefeated race favorite.

Maybe is one of 11 2-year-old fillies entered in the Moyglare Stud, a Group 1 race to be contested over seven furlongs. The Moyglare Stud is part of the 2011 Breeders’ Cup Challenge Win and You’re In program, and the winning connections gain an automatic starting berth in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf, with race entry fees covered and travel expenses subsidized.

Maybe was one of three Aidan O’Brien fillies to pass the race’s final entry stage Friday, but is far more accomplished than stablemates Chieftess and Soon. A daughter of Galileo owned by Michael Tabor, Maybe has won the first four starts of her career, winning three races in Ireland, including an easy last-out victory at The Curragh in the Group 2 Keeneland Debutante, as well as the Chesham Stakes at Ascot in England. Maybe has handled various course conditions, is a three-time winner at seven furlongs, and should prove formidable Sunday under O’Brien’s son, Joseph O’Brien.

The Moyglare Stud also includes La Collina, who came closer than any other horse to beating Maybe when she closed to within a neck of her on July 18 in the Silver Flash Stakes at Leopardstown. La Collina, one of two entrants along with Coral Wave for trainer Kevin Prendergast, returned to beat the previously unbeaten and O’Brien-trained Power in the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes earlier this month at The Curragh.
