Curlin’s Approval won the $75,000 Sugarloaf Key Handicap on Sunday at Gulfstream Park and in the process gave her rider, Tyler Gaffalione, his fifth win on the card. Curlin’s Approval won by 2 1/2 lengths over Estilo Femenino. It was another 3 1/4 lengths to Yes I’ll Go in third. The Sugarloaf Key was a six-furlong overnight stakes for fillies and mares. Curlin’s Approval ($3) brought an outstanding local record into the Sugarloaf Key, which marked her ninth win over the local main track from 16 starts at Gulfstream. She was turning back in distance from seven-eighths and, after breaking with the field, found herself last of six as Estilo Femenino put up fractions of 22.40 seconds for the opening quarter and 45.19 for the half-mile. Curlin’s Approval advanced three wide on the turn, came into the stretch well off the fence, and powered home to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:09.08. Gaffalione’s other winners on the 12-race card came in the sixth with Venezuelan Forever ($5.80), the seventh with Hi Hi Holly ($6.40); the ninth with Shafiro ($11.80); and the 10th with One Direction Song ($8.40). Happy Alter bred, co-owns and trains Curlin’s Approval, who last year was 13th in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. He said last week plans going forward would be discussed with George Isaacs, a representative of co-owner Bridlewood Farm. Curlin’s Approval is a 5-year-old by Curlin and has now won 9 of 20 starts and earned $653,725. Of her earnings, $630,225 has been banked at Gulfstream. Earlier on the card, the full sisters Nacho Mama ($22.60) and Awesome Mass ($6.80) won the respective fourth and fifth races. Nacho Mama was making her debut in a maiden special weight and won the 4 1/2-furlong race in a track-record time of 50.86 seconds. The horses are by Brethren and out of the mare Horah for Bailey.
