Curlin draws wide post for World Cup

Email

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Thirteen horses were officially entered in Saturday's $6 million Dubai World Cup on Wednesday night, and Horse of the Year Curlin will break from outside all but one of them.

Curlin, the favorite for the world's richest horse race, drew post 12, with only A.P. Arrow farther out. But the wide draw did not faze assistant trainer Scott Blasi, who said his main concern was staying away from the rail.

"With him, I'd rather draw post six or out than six or in," Blasi said.

Curlin has a tendency to bear out when he runs. He broke from the inside in his Dubai prep race for the World Cup and was slightly rank while trapped near the rail in the early going. Curlin settled into a good rhythm once jockey Robby Albarado guided him to the outside. Saturday night, Albarado can break and survey the horses in front of him before selecting a spot.

"He'll be able to put himself in good position," Blasi said.

The horse outside Curlin is another American invader, A.P. Arrow. Well Armed, winner of the San Antonio Handicap last out, drew post 2, with Great Hunter, the fourth American, in post 5.

The rest of the field, from inside to out, consists of Sway Yed, Happy Boy, Kocab, Premium Tap, Vermillion, Jalil, Asiatic Boy, and Lucky Find.

The 13-horse field in the 13th World Cup will equal the largest in the race's history.

Fields of 16 were entered in the $5 million Sheema Classic, over about 1 1/2 miles, and in the $5 million Duty Free, a race at about nine furlongs. Two of the Sheema Classic favorites, Viva Pataca (post 12) and Doctor Dino (post 15) drew poorly. Better Talk Now landed post 6, and the other American in the race, Spring House, got the 11.

The high-class Godolphin duo of Creachadoir (post 9) and Literato (post 10) break from adjacent gates in the Duty Free.

Post positions for Saturday's other three Thoroughbred races had been assigned Monday, but were only released Wednesday night. There are 11 horses, including three from Godolphin and two from trainer Mike de Kock, in the UAE Derby, with 15-horse fields entered in the Golden Shaheen and the Godolphin Mile. Idiot Proof landed a potentially difficult post 14 in the Golden Shaheen, with Benny the Bull in post 10 and Diabolical in the five slot.

The U.S. horse Barcola had no luck at the draw and will break from post 15 in the Godolphin Mile. Diamond Stripes did better and breaks from post 8.
