Culpeper Moon faces a sharp stablemate

EmailWINNIPEG, Manitoba - Culpeper Moon looks for her second stakes win of the year in Saturday's Matron Breeders' Cup for fillies and mares here at Assiniboia Downs.

The 1 1/8-mile Matron, which attracted a field of eight, carries a base purse of $45,000 with an additional $25,000 for Breeders' Cup-eligible horses. All but Culpeper Moon and Thunder Sky are eligible.

One of three in the race for the connections of Shyman Farm and trainer Martin Drexler, Culpeper Moon last raced in the City of Edmonton Distaff at Northlands Park in August, finishing second to Monashee, who won her ninth consecutive stakes race that day. Before that Culpeper Moon won the Winnipeg Sun here by 7 1/2 lengths and an allowance by 6 1/2.

Alan Cuthbertson, who also rode the two other Shyman-Drexler entrants, Empress Pegasus and Spillway, in their last start, sticks with Culpeper Moon.

Empress Pegasus won the Matron Breeders' Cup last year. This year, her best result in a stakes was a close second behind Beshairt in the Canada Day. Empress Pegasus defeated second-level allowance company a week ago in her best race of the season. Chris Husbands will ride.

Spillway and Polynesian Kitty, the two 3-year-olds in the field, have faced each other here in their last two starts. Spillway narrowly defeated Polynesian Kitty in the Jack Hardy Stakes last time out, while Polynesian Kitty won the Assiniboia Oaks the start before that with Spillway finishing sixth.

Tyrone Nelson will ride Spillway, while Jordan Olesiak will pilot Polynesian Kitty for trainer Jamie Ness.

Beshairt won the prep for this race in her last start. Trained by Patty Ross, Beshairt was second in the La Verendrye and won the Canada Day earlier this season. Ken Hendricks will ride.

Victorious Laurie, trained by Ian McDonald, was a close second behind Beshairt in the prep. Paul Leacock is up.

Selita's Dream, a three-time winner this year, ships in from Alberta. Ricky Walcott has been named to ride.
