Cruz sweeps three turf races

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Carlos Cruz swept all three turf races on the Sunday card, capped off by a wire-to-wire victory aboard Amber's Way in the $50,000 Klassy Briefcase Stakes for fillies and mares at five furlongs.

Amber's Way ($6.60), trained by John R.S. Fisher, broke sharply out of the gate and led the field through rapid fractions of 21.12 and 43.78, but was never seriously threatened down the stretch. Slewgenes closed from last to first to get up for second, one length behind the 4-year-old Amber's Way. Cloud City was a neck back in third.

Amber's Way improved to 2 for 2 on the turf, with her first grass start coming in her last race June 8 at Pimlico. She covered the five-furlong distance over a firm turf course in 55.92 before a crowd of 13,818.

"She's a very honest, classy filly, everything that the competition fears," Fisher said. "We'll keep her sprinting on the grass for now and look to stretch her out later on."
