Croton Road fits in marathon

Croton Road, a seven-time winner over Calder’s turf course, tries to end a six-race losing streak that has lasted nearly a year when he goes 1?3/8 miles in the $55,000 Mataji Stakes at Calder.

A 5-year-old trained by Ron Spatz, Croton Road hasn’t won since capturing an overnight stakes last August with a career-best 105 Beyer Speed Figure. He hasn’t been better than third in five starts this year, but he faced far stronger company in two of those races, the Grade 2 Mac Diarmida Handicap and the Grade 3 Appleton Handicap.

Chelly B, first or second in 4 of 6 starts on Calder’s grass, tries stakes company for the first time in his 13-race career.

Like Croton Road, Imawildandcrazyguy also has back class. He returns to the turf for the first time since finishing far back in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf Handicap last January. He was good enough to finish second over a yielding surface in last fall’s Grade 3 Calder Derby.
