Counting Thoroughbreds only, Zamora hits 1,000

Jockey Chris Zamora notched his 1,000th Thoroughbred victory last Sunday when he guided Dixie Bandjo to victory in the seventh race at Sunland Park. Dixie Bandjo stalked the pace in the six-furlong maiden race, took over into the lane, and drew clear to win by 3 1/2 lengths as the 4-5 favorite.

With that victory Zamora, 43, a rider for more than 22 years, made it 1,974 overall in his career. Of his 974 non-Thoroughbred victories, 972 have come aboard Quarter Horses while riding primarily in the Southwest. He also has two mixed-breed wins in his career.

He won the 1994 All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs on Noblesse Six.

* Buddha Lady marched to a nine-length victory in Tuesday's $37,500 allowance feature, and in doing so broke the one-mile track record. A 4-year-old filly trained by Chris Hartman, Buddha Lady beat a solid group of fillies and mares with ease under Casey Lambert.

She was timed in 1:34.62, bettering the former record of 1:35.38 set by Mr. Trieste in 2004.

After the race, Hartman said, "She was going real fast. I thought she had a good shot if she could finish. She kicked in real good. She's been facing some tough company lately."
