Costa Rising wins A.L. "Red" Erwin

Costa Rising won his fifth straight race on Friday, when he cruised to an easy, two and a half length win over Chromite Solider in the $75,000 A.L. "Red" Erwin at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La. It was another nose back in third to Tommy's Turn.

The Erwin was for 3-year-olds bred in Louisiana. It was run at about a mile on turf, and the course was listed as good on Friday.

Costa Rising broke well as the 4-5 favorite, and led the field through fractions of 23.58 seconds for the opening quarter, 47.34 for the half-mile mark, and 1:12.74 for six furlongs. Costa Rising proceeded to cover the distance in 1:36.75, and paid $3.80.

Mario Reyes rode the winner for trainer Joseph Boxie.

Costa Rising began his win streak when he was stretched out to two turns back in April. He was a seven-length allowance winner at Evangeline, then came back and won the $50,000 Franks Memorial at a mile on turf at Louisiana Downs on May 5.

Costa Rising then won another allowance at Evangeline before taking the $75,000 BB Rayburn at that track on July 1. All of his wins have come against Louisiana-breds, and all have come around two turns. Costa Rising is a son of Royal Strand.

Costa Rising earned $30,000 for the win, which was his sixth from 10 career starts. He has now earned $183,648 for owner Charles A. Castille Jr.
