Correct Call looks to wire Royal North

Correct Call will try to take a field of eight Ohio-bred 3-year-old fillies wire to wire in the $50,000 Royal North at Beulah Park.

Trained by Mark Shuman, Correct Call won her 2010 debut in front-running fashion at Charles Town on March 11, drawing off to win by 6 1/2 lengths going 6 1/2 furlongs. The Consolidator filly was a $180,000 purchase in February 2009 but was claimed in August for $50,000 at Monmouth by her current connections. She signaled her readiness with a bullet three-furlong work in 35.20 seconds on March 20 at the Fair Hill training center. Justin Shepherd will come in to ride again.

Seven of the eight fillies entered in the Royal North have been campaigned out of state in their short careers, and five of the eight won their last outing.

Ohio Star is the morning-line favorite in what will be her first out of the year. Her last race was Aug. 22, when she came from off the pace to win the Miss Ohio at Thistledown for trainer Bill Connelly. Scott Spieth rides for the first time.

Miss Twenty One comes back to Ohio after winning at first asking on March 4 at Tampa Bay Downs. Trained by Jo Dawn Martin, the daughter of Marquetry won a five-furlong maiden claiming race by 2 3/4 lengths, coming from just off the early pace.
