Coolmore nominates three to Breeders' Cup - Canford Cliffs, Treasure Beach, and So You Think

Coolmore has nominated Group 1 winners Canford Cliffs, Treasure Beach, and So You Think to the Breeders’ Cup via the open-enrollment program, which the Breeders’ Cup launched this year to increase the number of horses eligible for, and likely to participate in, the Breeders’ Cup championship races.

Coolmore paid $25,000 for each horse to make the runners eligible for the Breeders’ Cup. None had been nominated as foals.

Treasure Beach, by Galileo, won the June 26 Irish Derby. Four-year-old Canford Cliffs, by Tagula, has won five consecutive Group 1 events, most recently winning the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot over three-time Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Goldikova. So You Think, a 6-year-old son of High Chaparral, won the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup this year.

The Breeders’ Cup’s open-enrollment program was to end Thursday. It is available to horses not previously nominated to the Breeders’ Cup who are by sires anywhere that have been Breeders’ Cup-nominated in 2011. Before the open enrollment program, a supplementary entry would have cost $100,000 per horse at this stage for the Coolmore trio. Under the program, yearlings of 2011 can be nominated for $3,000, juveniles for $6,000, and 3-year-olds and up for $25,000. After June 30, the fees for juveniles and up will rise to $100,000 if they are by Breeders’ Cup-nominated sires or $200,000 if their sires are not nominated.
