Contenders Profiles Claiming Series Leg 1 Division 1—Race 7

Portland, OR—Leg 1 of the Route Claiming Series features 27 runners spread out over three divisions.  Here are profiles of each of the runners entered for Leg 1 of the Route Claiming Series.

Division 1—Race 7

1. Stellar Blue
Owner: Karen Kirshner and Tom Allen
Trainer: Robbie Baze
Jockey: Lance Bullock
Won a mile and one eighth race two starts back so clearly likes going a route of ground.  First try against open runners last time wasn’t pretty so he’ll have to step it up to be a contender.

2. Mamoonya
Owner: Nick Lowe and Dan Brock
Trainer: Nick Lowe
Jockey:  Jorge Rosales
Comes into this race off a win, but that was against non-winners of two in the last nine months, so this is a step up in class.  That win was also sprinting, so the distance will be a bit of a question mark.

3. Loose Tappets
Owner: Kristen Geertz
Trainer: Derral Braden
Jockey:  Jose Zunino
Old veteran who seems to always put in a decent closing run, although he rarely gets up to win, with 18 second and third place finishes in his career compared to just three career wins.

4. West Seattle Boy
Owner: Jerry Carmody and Lisa Baze
Trainer: Rigoberto Velasquez
Jockey:  Joe Crispin
One of the coolest horses around, with 26 wins and over $180,000 in the bank over his 108 start career.  Didn’t fire at all last time out, but was very wide that day.  Gets Crispin back aboard who was on for his last win four starts back.

5. Taking Liberties
Owner: Howard Belvoir
Trainer: Howard Belvoir
Jockey:  Javier Matias
Won a division of Leg 2 of the sprint claiming series, hasn’t fired in hihs last two starts and will now take back to two turns, something he’s done well at before.  Leading jockey Matias gets back on board and has had success riding this runner.

6. Swiss Exploit
Owner: Bob and Pat Cosgrove
Trainer: Jonathan Nance
Jockey:  Debbie Hoonan
Scored early in the meet sprinting and has pretty much exclusively been sprinting, so trying two turns for the first time since running 7 furlongs at Ferndale, which is a bullring.

7. Outside Shot
Owner: Ron Haasl
Trainer: Ron Haasl
Jockey: Luis Torres
Has had a good meeting at Portland Meadows this year with a win, a second and a third from four starts.  This is definitely a step up in class, and he just missed by a head last time he went a mile and 70 yards.

8. Canvasback Cove
Owner: Karen Tilden
Trainer: Sam Tilden
Jockey:  Ruben Camacho
Really got thumped last time, beaten more than 28 lengths against conditioned $2,500 claimers.  Seems to do his best work when on or right off the lead so look for Ruben to maybe send this runner early.

9. Shadarockem
Owner:  Clockwise Racing
Trainer: Jonathan Nance
Jockey: Eliska Kubinova
Ships up from Golden Gate Fields and has been exclusively a router going two turns against tough mid and low level claimers down in San Francisco.  Gets a 5 pound allowance with bug-girl Kubinova on board and should be prominent throughout.
