Constitution hits seven figures out of the box

Email

Multiple Grade 1 winner Constitution, who stood his first season this year at WinStar Farm, recorded a major coup with a seven-figure mare in his first auction as a covering sire.

Ithinkisawapudycat, dam of Grade 3 winner Sweet Loretta, sold for $2.2 million to Mount Brilliant Farm, carrying a foal from Constitution’s first crop. Fueled by that success, the young stallion was represented by six mares in foal that sold for $3,532,000 through the first half of Keeneland November, an average price of $588,667. The latter figure not only leads all first-year covering sires at the auction, it ranks him fifth overall among covering stallions with three or more sold.

Next among first-year covering sires by average is Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, as the resident of Coolmore’s Ashford Stud was represented by seven mares in foal sold during Books 1 and 2 for $2,775,000, an average of $396,429. The top price was $600,000 for Wile Cat, an unraced Storm Cat mare who is the dam of Group 3 winner Shumoos. The mare joins Springhouse Farm.

Champion Honor Code is averaging $167,313 from 16 mares in foal sold, while Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Liam’s Map is represented by 14 mares averaging $162,286. Both young stallions stand at Lane’s End.
