Consistent 'Class' tries two turns

ALBANY, Calif. - Class Edition has been a profitable investment for trainer Ed Moger Jr.'s main clients, Curt and Lila Lanning.

Purchased for $17,500 as a yearling, Class Edition has hit the board in 10 of 11 starts for earnings of $50,190. She will receive a new challenge Monday at Golden Gate Fields when she tries two turns for the first time in a one-mile allowance race for fillies and mares.

A 3-year-old filly by the Danzig sire Game Plan, Class Edition was bred by Becky Birklid.

"The breeder has been telling me forever, 'Why don't you route her?'" said Moger.

After winning her maiden Oct. 29, 2003, Class Edition was given seven months off. She returned in May and has not been off the board in eight starts this year, with four seconds and three thirds, all against older rivals in $32,000 starter allowance company, and a one-length victory last out in a $40,000 claimer against her own age group.

Class Edition takes on older horses again Monday, when she meets six rivals.

Class Edition had a half-mile drill in 47.20 seconds on Monday. Moger says he has done nothing special to prepare Class Edition for her first route.

"It's breeding that gets them that far," he said. "She's fit right now, so there's not much to do. She'll run as far as she can."

Relaxing Green, who likes to run on the front, is 0 for 8 at this level but has hit the board seven times. Hidden Beauty and Indian Attack, coming north from Hollywood Park, have both shown speed in recent starts.

Two jockeys suspended

On Saturday, Jeff Bonde lodged a trainer's objection after the ninth race, when his horse Running Kitty finished second to Mission Terrace. The two bumped entering the stretch and brushed again later.

Bonde's objection was denied, and his jockey, Roberto Gonzalez, was handed a three-day suspension beginning Monday "for failure to make a proper effort to maintain a straight course in the stretch and causing interference."

Jockey Jose Rivera Jr. was also given a three-day suspension beginning Monday for his ride aboard third-place finisher Double Sweet in Saturday's fourth race.
