Conduit loses by nose in return

Conduit lost a bob of the head decision to Cima de Triomphe in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown Park on Thursday evening, failing by a nose in his first start since landing the Breeders' Cup Turf seven months ago.

Third throughout much of the 1 1/4 miles of this $103,000 Group 3, Conduit battled his way to the lead at the furlong marker only to be run down on the line by Cima de Triomphe. An Irish-bred son of Galileo won won last year's Italian Derby, Cima de Triomphe is trained by British-based Italian Luca Cumani and was ridden Frenchman Christophe Lemaire for his Japanese owner Teruya Yoshida. The 4-1 winner, who covered the 10 furlongs on good ground in 2:06.60, was carrying seven pounds fewer than the 5-2 Conduit, who was running at a distance at least two furlongs short of his best. The 9-5 favorite, Pipedreamer, faded to fifth, beaten 1 1/2 lengths.

The three European-trained winners of Breeders' Cup races who remained in training this year have all lost their seasonal debuts, Conduit following the failures of Goldikova in the Prix d'Ispahan and Donativum in the King Charles II Stakes.

On the same card, the 5-1 Geordieland survived a stewards' inquiry to defeat the 1-2 Patkai by five lengths in the Group 2, $159,000 Henry II Stakes, getting the two miles in 3:30.07. Second in the last two runnings of the Ascot Gold Cup, Geordieland will meet Patkai in that race on June 18.

* At Saint-Cloud on Thursday, Alpine Rose scored a 19-1 upset in the Group 2, $181,000 Prix Corrida, leading halfway through the 1 5/16-mile contest for older fillies and mares under Gerald Mosse to defeat Danse Grecque by a half-length with the favorite, Shemima fourth, 1 1/2 lengths behind the winner, who was timed in 2:17.40 on good to soft ground. An Alain de Royer-Dupre-trained full sister to Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud winner Fragrant Mix, Alpine Rose will go next in that 1 1/2-mile, Group 1 on June 28.
