Composure and Jerry Bailey (outside) win the Santa Anita Oaks over Elloluv. Now the question is whether she will run in the Kentucky Derby or Oaks.

ARCADIA, Calif. - There is no change in the rankings among 3-year-old fillies at Santa Anita.

Composure on Saturday proved she is slightly better than Elloluv, beating her for the second consecutive time in the $300,000 . Composure outfinished Elloluv by a neck in the Grade 1 Las Virgenes Stakes over a mile on Feb. 9, and won the Oaks by three-quarters of a length.

In the Grade 1 Oaks, the heavily favored Composure ($2.80) ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.34, confirming her position as a leading candidate for the Kentucky Oaks at Churchill Downs in May.

Composure was confidently ridden by Jerry Bailey. After breaking from the rail, Composure was three wide on the first turn, racing just off Elloluv, who set a slow pace of 24.59 and 48.57 seconds. Elloluv was closely followed down the backstretch by 10-1 Go for Glamour and Composure.

On the final turn, the three fillies were within a length of each other. Go for Glamour faded from contention before the quarter pole, leaving Elloluv and Composure to fight out the finish.

Composure led by a head at the eighth pole and by a half-length at the sixteenth pole, but Elloluv did not give up.

"The last sixteenth of a mile she tried to come back, but couldn't do it," said Patrick Valenzuela, who rode Elloluv.

Elloluv finished 4 1/2 lengths clear of Go for Glamour, who was making her stakes debut. Harbor Blues finished fourth, nine lengths in front of Long Term Wish in the field of five.

Composure was an overwhelming favorite in the show pool. Of the $811,484 bet in the pool, Composure attracted $727,944. There was a minus show pool of $151,346. In addition, there was a minus place pool of $1,215.

Composure races for Bob and Beverly Lewis and is trained by Bob Baffert. By Touch Gold, Composure has won 4 of 8 starts and $731,300. Last year, she won the Oak Leaf Stakes and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Composure has been nominated to the Kentucky Derby. Baffert said last week that a decision on that race will be made in late April. Lewis on Saturday said his filly was far from a certainty for the Kentucky Derby.

"I don't want to make any reference to the Derby," he said. "I don't know if that will pass."

* Hall of Fame jockey Julie Krone underwent precautionary X-rays on Saturday after being unseated from her mount at the start of the fifth race at Santa Anita.

Riding 9-1 Sublet, Krone was unseated when her mount stumbled at the start of a sprint on the hillside turf course. She walked into the ambulance on her own power, and was taken to Arcadia Methodist.
