Columbus: Two sharp fillies face their elders in Bill Callihan

B G New Idea and C O Barqueen, the one-two finishers in the Inaugural Stakes at the Columbus Races on Aug. 5, move up to face older company in the $10,000 Bill Callihan Stakes in what should be a wide-open affair going 6 1/2 furlongs at Columbus on Saturday night.

Both fillies have defeated older rivals this year in allowance company, and a win by either would be no surprise.

B G New Idea, trained by Cresencio Arceo, has four wins this year, including a maiden win at Sam Houston in January. The Inaugural was her first stakes win. She will again have Mike Luark in the irons.

C O Barqueen started her season off at Fonner Park with three wins in her first four starts, including the Pepsi Stakes. She finished fifth in the Princess Stakes, then shipped to Assiniboia Downs in Canada, where she was sixth in the Chantilly Stakes last time out.

Cindys Vindication, a 5-year-old trained by Chuck Turco, comes into the race off an optional claiming win here Aug. 20 and will likely vie for the role of favorite. She rallied from well back in her recent win and will be making her stakes debut Saturday.

B G New Idea and Cindys Vindication have been one-two in their previous meetings this year, with Cindys Vindication winning a second-level allowance race at Lincoln and B G New Idea defeating her at the next level in nonwinners-of-four company.
