Columbus: End of an era

COLUMBUS, Neb. - The last of the Nebraska Breeders' Sweepstakes races will be run Sunday. The Sophomore and Sophomore Fillies, each with a $15,000-estimated purse, will end the series that began in 1990 at Ak-Sar-Ben.

The Breeders' Sweepstakes program has been in the process of being phased out over the past few years. Sunday's fields of 3-year-olds represent the final foal crop registered under the old program.

Mr Clearwater heads the field of six entered in the Sophomore Stakes at a 1 1/16 miles. A winner of four straight, Mr Clearwater won the Horsemen's Park Breeders' Derby by 4 3/4 lengths on July 21 in his last start. That mile race was his first time going beyond six furlongs. The change in surfaces from the Omaha track to the deeper track at Columbus will provide a test of his ability.

Jerry Carkeek rides Mr Clearwater for trainer David Anderson from post 6.

Magic Trump, part of a Herb Riecken-trained entry with Mayihavethisdance, heads a field of six for the Sophomore Fillies at a mile and 70 yards.

Magic Trump won her third stakes of the year in last weekend's Inaugural Stakes and will run a route Sunday for the first time. Armando Martinez rides from post 3.
