Columbus: Different tactics win NBS divisions

Email

Columbus, Neb. - Bengal Gal and Dazzling J. R. took different routes in overcoming a slow, deep track to win their respective divisions of the Nebraska Breeders' Sweepstakes.

Bengal Gal captured the $14,250 NBS Debutante by leading gate to wire for a 5 3/4-length victory. The tiring track was taking its toll by the end of the six furlongs.

Trained by Marv Johnson, Bengal Gal returned $4.40 as the slight favorite in a field of five, finishing in 1:22.20 on a slow track.

Dazzling J. R., under Alex Birzer, stayed off the pace in the NBS Juvenile and rallied up the rail through the lane to run down a staggering favorite, C. C. Diamond, in the late stages and post a 1 1/4-length win. Dazzling J. R. returned $22.20, getting the six furlongs in 1:19.00 for trainer David Anderson.
