Columbus: 2003 winner returns

Doug's Shadow, winner of the Amadevil Handicap on Aug. 13, may rate a slight edge in a full field of 10 entered in the $10,000-added Labor Day Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs at Columbus.

Doug's Shadow won this race in 2003 and has been a consistent performer this year in a light campaign, winning 2 of his 6 starts. Trainer Julie Larmon has Yuri Yaranga named to ride Doug's Shadow from post 2 under top weight of 122 pounds.

The main threat should come from the speedy What About David, who won the Big Red Mile Handicap at Lincoln this summer. Trained by Andy Johnson, What About David set the pace in the Amadevil but faded to fifth, beaten 5 1/4 lengths by Doug's Shadow. Lee Sensenbach will ride from post 3 under 119 pounds.

Mortrump overcame a stumble at the start of the Amadevil to rally for second and should also garner support Monday. Leading rider R. D. Williams switches from What About David to ride Mortrump in this spot for trainer Herb Riecken.

With the likely prospect of Call Me Frosty and Hez Comin Thru joining What About David in a contested battle for the lead, Doug's Shadow and Mortrump should have a good pace at which to run with their late kicks.
