Colonial: Supreme overcomes trouble to win Buckland

Email

Four-year-old filly Supreme won her first stakes on Saturday at Colonial Downs, rallying outside in the stretch to capture the $50,000 Buckland by a half-length over Toni’s the Won.

Trained by Leigh Delacour for owner-breeder Fares Farm, Supreme and jockey Luis Garcia had excellent position coming off the turn while stalking a contested early pace, but Colony Club came out into Supreme’s path, forcing Garcia to steady at the top of the stretch. Supreme, though, seemed little effected by the trouble, leveling off nicely the final furlong to wear down game pacesetter Toni’s the Won.

Supreme, the favorite, paid $5.60 to win and was timed in 1:02.90 seconds for 5 1/2 furlongs on firm turf.

What She Said finished third, while possible favorite Suzzona was a trainer’s scratch.
