Colonial: Fitting win for Bestowed

Email

Michael Dickinson not only had a karmic advantage in the Da Hoss at Colonial Downs - a race named after his two-time Breeders' Cup Mile winner - he also, it turns out, had the best horse. Bestowed came flying from last place under Joe Rocco Jr. and won the one-mile turf race by 1 1/4 lengths over Touched by Madness. Legal Control finished third in the field of seven 3-year-olds and upward.

Tune of the Spirit set a fast pace on a firm turf course, going in 22.76 seconds, 46.54, and 1:10.56. Touched by Madness, who had his heels clipped by sixth-place finisher Running Tide on the far turn, made the lead in midstretch, but Bestowed caught him a sixteenth from the wire.

Bestowed ($6.20), owned by Gallagher's Stud, was making only his second start of the year in the $60,000 Da Hoss. A New York-bred son of Repeal, he had finished third in an optional claimer for statebreds on the Belmont turf in May.
