Colonial Downs: Potaro by neck

Potaro and Bay Eagle hooked up in the stretch of Saturday's $200,000 Virginia Derby at Colonial Downs, in New Kent, Va., and Potaro, under Brent Bartram, came away a neck winner. The victory was the third straight for Potaro, who is owned by Augustin Stable and trained by Jonathan Sheppard.

Potero returned $6.40 as the favorite in the field of nine 3-year-olds. He ran 1 1/4 miles on the turf in 2:02.17.

Potaro and Bay Eagle both raced well off the early pace in the Virginia Derby, set by Woodmoon. Potaro swung out from behind horses entering the stretch, as Bay Eagle rallied six wide. The two pulled away in the final furlong, with Potaro, on the inside, just keeping his neck in front. Confucious Say finished third, 2 1/2 lengths behind Bay Eagle.

* Colstar justified her 4-5 favoritism in the Saturday's Grade 3 All Along Breeders' Cup, winning by three lengths over Lucky Lune. Owned by Beverly Randolph Steinman and trained by Paul Fout, Colstar returned $3.80. She ran the 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.53 under Jon Court.

The $90,000 winner's prize put Colstar over $1 million in earnings.
