Collmus, Scheinman to receive Old Hilltop Award

Racecaller Larry Collmus and turf writer John Scheinman have been selected to receive the Old Hilltop Award, which recognizes excellence in covering Thoroughbred racing, according to the administrator of the award, Pimlico Race Course.

Collmus, a native of Baltimore, and Scheinman, who got his college degree in Washington, D.C., will be presented the awards during the May 14 Alibi Breakfast, an event held every year at Pimlico on the Thursday prior to the Preakness Stakes.

Collmus, who started his career calling races at Maryland tracks, recently took over from Tom Durkin as the racecaller at the New York Racing Association’s three tracks. He has been the racecaller for NBC’s Triple Crown broadcasts for four years and the racecaller for the network’s Breeders’ Cup broadcasts for three years.

A former turf writer for the Washington Post, Scheinman was named the 2014 winner of the Eclipse Award for feature/commentary writing for a profile of the late Maryland horseman Richard Small.
