Collect Call should collect Oaks

Email

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Collect Call figures to be a solid favorite in the $175,000 British Columbia Breeders' Cup Oaks Saturday afternoon at Hastings Park. She'll be facing eight other 3-year-old fillies in the 1 1/8-mile Oaks, but none of them has her graded stakes credentials and they won't get a break in the weights, with all starters carrying 121 pounds.

Also on Saturday's card are the $100,000 Sadie Diamond Futurity and the $35,000 Cover Girl Handicap for fillies and mares. Both races are at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Collect Call, who began her career at Hastings Park under the care of trainer Sid Martin, debuted with a 2 1/2-length victory in Lassie Stakes last year. Not long after, she was sold to Rod and Lorraine Rodriguez for $250,000 and sent to Southern California and trainer Christopher Paasch, who has developed her into a graded stakes winner.

Collect Call won the Grade 3 Santa Ysabel at Santa Anita in early January and then finished fourth in both the Las Virgenes and Santa Anita Oaks. Collect Call shipped to Oaklawn Park and finished second in the Fantasy Stakes and then finished third in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks on May 4.

In her most recent start, she finished third as the odds-on choice in a $62,500 optional race at Del Mar on Aug. 2. She has good speed and breaks from post 1 with Chris Loseth aboard.

Lady Vye looks like the one to beat in the Sadie Diamond Futurity. She won the restricted B.C. Cup Debutante on Aug. 4 and finished second in the Lassie Stakes on Aug. 18.
