Coastalota on turf in Margarita

Email

Coastalota will make a rare start on turf Saturday night in the $50,000 Margarita Breeders' Cup Handicap at Retama Park. The 117-pound starting highweight in the 1 1/16-mile turf race for fillies and mares is Academic Angel.

Coastalota last raced on turf in May 2002, and finished third to stakes winner Mysia Jo in a turf allowance race at Lone Star. More recently, Coastalota finished third in the $50,000 Delicada on dirt at Louisiana Downs on July 19.

A winner of $348,598, she is trained by Randy Mayfield and will be ridden by Bobby Walker Jr.

Academic Angel could be favored following her second-place finish in a tough turf allowance race last out at Lone Star. Asmussen has given the mount to Jeremy Beasley.

* The Texas Horsemen's Partnership is now aligned with CANTER of Texas. The non-profit organization, which is a chapter of a national group, finds homes for retiring racehorses. Volunteers have started to pass out information about the program to horsemen at Retama and Sam Houston.

* Remington Park has opened its seventh offtrack betting facility: Henry Hudson's Pub at 7500 SE 15th Street in Oklahoma City.
