Cluster of Stars named 2013 New York-bred Horse of the Year

Multiple Grade 2 winner Cluster of Stars was named the 2013 New York-bred Horse of the Year on Tuesday by New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc.

That award and other divisional honors were presented at the breed organization’s annual awards banquet at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The winners in each division were selected by a group of voters including New York turf writers, handicappers, and racing analysts.

Cluster of Stars, a 5-year-old Greeley’s Galaxy mare, went undefeated in six starts during her 2013 campaign, racking up earnings of $519,600 for owner Turtle Bird Stable and trainer Steve Asmussen. Four of those victories came against stakes competition, including wins in the Grade 2 Gallant Bloom Handicap and statebred Iroquois Stakes at Belmont, and the Grade 2 Distaff Handicap and listed Correction Stakes at Aqueduct.

Cluster of Stars also took home honors as champion older female and champion female sprinter. Bred by Michael McPoland and Sean Finn, Cluster of Stars is out of the winning Honour and Glory mare Babyurthegreatest, who was recognized as New York’s Broodmare of the Year.

Earlier this year, Cluster of Stars was sold at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky winter mixed sale for $300,000, going to Town & Country Farms. She was booked to first-year sire Graydar for 2014.

Also receiving multiple honors at Tuesday’s awards banquet were King Kreesa and Discreet Marq.

King Kreesa was named champion older male and champion turf male. The 5-year-old King Cugat gelding won three of eight starts last year for earnings of $413,000.

Campaigned by Gerald and Susan Kresa and trained by Jeremiah Engelhardt, King Kreesa’s 2013 campaign was highlighted by a win in the Grade 3 Poker Stakes at Belmont, and placings in the Grade 2 Fourstardave Handicap – behind Horse of the Year Wise Dan - and the Grade 3 Fort Marcy Stakes and Appleton Stakes. The gelding, who also won a pair of New York-bred stakes, was bred in New York by Horse Partners.

Discreet Marq was named New York’s champion 3-year-old female and turf female. The Discreet Cat filly won four of eight starts last year, never missing the board, for earnings of $657,500. She won the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks, the Grade 2 Sands Point Stakes, the listed Pebbles Stakes, and a New York-bred stakes race in 2013, and finished in the money in the Grade 1 Garden City Stakes and Matriarch Stakes.

Discreet Marq races as a homebred for Patricia Generazio and is trained by Christophe Clement.
