DRF Plus Preview

Race 2

Like a Boss
Didn't have much to offer from a wide spot in his first start in 5 months and now he'll stretch out a panel for his second local spin; gelding doesn't have early foot but there's not much of that commodity in here so maybe an alert break and aggressive push by this capable new pilot puts him a little closer from the bell and he does have a right to move forward with the comebacker behind him; price should be right.
Acro's Game
Gets a weight break with the triple bug named on the quick return off another weak effort; gelding does have a race over the track, but he hasn't done much yet and looks to have his work cut out for him here at another big price.
Statebred has lost more times than the rest of this field combined and now he'll move back in to face open company; he's another with zero early foot and his recent numbers are nothing to get excited about, but he does have an effort at the local stand in him and he's earned a handful of minor awards here.
Silver Shot
Boasts some slow recent breezes for his debut under the care of an outfit that's been on a poor recent run with its runners right out of the box; gray is by a sire who gets 8% winners from his newcomers and the unraced dam dropped 2 time sprint winners from each of her foals to race including one who scored first time out.
Artemus Paperboy
First part of the coupling drops in for a tag after taking plenty of tote support and suffering through a tough trip first out on synthetic footing at Arlington; he had trained well at Keeneland prior to the unveiling and rallied to finish within a length of the runner up while catching an easy winner in that one; barn does well second out and wouldn't term this a desperate drop as the owners are currently leading the standings here and are all out to hold that spot; have to think an improved effort is on tap on the stretchout and with a clean break he figures to show some early foot; one to beat.
Slick Daddy
Sire gets 12% winners from his debut runners and the unraced dam's lone foal to race was a 2 time sprint winner; works aren't much and the barn hasn't had any luck with its limited starters here, but they are coming off a Belmont meeting in which half of their 22 starters did finish in the exacta and the pilot named certainly knows his way around the local main track.
Start Jumping
Fresh gelding makes his first start in over 5 months while going first off the claim for a barn that boasts a recent winner right back; bullet drill earlier in the week suggests he's on his toes for the comebacker and each of his sprint efforts on the inner earned a number that would put him in the thick of this one; contender.
Other half of the Ramsey entry gets off the fence after getting on track too late from there while trying a shorter trip here Opening week; Rosario sticks and the added panel should help his run, but he'll need to get more involved early in a heat that doesn't look to feature a lot of early lick.
Joey N
Earned a nice number in the downstate placing at this trip 3 starts back but didn't have an impact in either of his subsequent spins; it certainly looks like he just doesn't want the the lawn so that excuses his last and he wasn't far off the runner up when catching a runaway winner going a bit further 2 back downstate; he could be set to take a good step forward here, but he'll need some help in front of him; consider.

Race 3

State Flag
2 big hurdles in his way today - first time dirt, and first time going this far; good news, though, is he's certainly bred to handle both; big meet for Maker (7 for first 31, 23%) and Rosario was up for this guy's last 2 nice outings; remember, though, he's a maiden winner only so today he's facing some guys with multiple wins over winners, too.
Coupled with So Scott; not only has experience playing this game, but success as the only other time he tried it came here almost exactly a year ago and he romped by 6 1/4 lengths; been a real pro for a long time - hey, you don't win 11 times by accident; trouble is, he's a 9yo now and his last 2 outings weren't very pretty so while he's handled this game could it be time and all those furlongs is finally getting the better of him, hmmmm?
Hasn't tried this trip oin the flat, but you can see from all those hurdles he's no stranger to this type of distance game; of course, that was hurdling, on turf whereas today it's flat and dirt; just has the 1 win to his credit and he's facing a few guys today with multiple wins over winners; again, at least no stranger to this type of distance but is that enough to overcome some other obvious flaws?
Kings Village
Had a real nice 2012 (3 for 7) but things haven't gone well at all this year (0 for 12); they try a new game giving him this type of distance, but he's also up in price; does have a bit of speed, at least it should show up at this trip with what figure slower splits; still, his overall for this year is tough to embrace.
Regal Warrior
Ran on nicely going a mile at BEL May 22; doubles up distance-wise but with his pedigree this trip shouldn't be out of his reach; freshened since that runa nd you have to like the works since as at least they indicate he comes here feeling good, something you might not be able to say for the others; ample tactical speed should have him in a good spot from the start, too.
Le Deluge
Along with Ea the only 1 in here with experience at this distance, at least on the flat; good news, too, is the one time he tried this trip, on PID's synthetic track last summer, he won nicely; form tailed off since but he's also been in some tough spots; moves to dirt, which he's handled, and the class drop can't hurt either.
So Scott
Coupled with Ea; it's a whole new ballgame distance-wise but the way he just continues to plug along hints he might be able to handle this trip; sure wouldn't mind mud judging by that big May 8 win in the goo dat BEL; form hasn't been bad since, either and after facing some nice NY-breds he may appreciate the drop, though obviously the 2-mile hurdle is no small issue.

Race 8

After regaining fitness with a race at Pimlico Mau 18, his last two starts have been very good - first winning a G3 and then running down a G1 winner in Joha next out in the Solar Splendor; also beat Balance The Books in that race, too; has largely avoided the cream of the 3YO turf division to this point, however; so he still has things to prove from a class standpoint; like others more.
Get in Line
Looks like he's in here to prevent Rydilluc the chance to coast to the lead; he obviously doesn't seem classy enough to compete at this level, but that's likely not the issue; Ramsey undoubtedly wants to try to win the race with entrymate Charming Kitten, enhancing the stats and reputation of sire Kitten's Joy, who stands at his farm.
Perhaps he didn't care for the wet course last time; we can't even blame the distance, either, as he was finished before the eighth pole; excuse that failure, however, and his form is excellent; and the presence of Get In Line as a pacemaker for Charming Kitten doesn't really affect his chances; his preferred running style is to settle in second, and take the race to his opponents with a big move on the second turn; distance suits; training well; highly capable, provided the turf is firm; second selection.
North Slope
Did not have a smooth run in a paceless race last time and now blinkers come on; would expect faster splits to unfold in this race, and this one might be able to run back to his race from two starts ago, but he scored in fast time at Belmont after sitting off a 46-second half mile split; obviously not as accomplished as others, having raced in only one stakes race and going unplaced in that event.
Charming Kitten
That was a tough beat in the Virginia Derby, he made a threatening move along the fence in an intimidating position and still nearly won the race; finished behind Rydilluc in March and early June but was well in front of him last time; late running style leaves him a little more vulnerable to troubled trips than Rydilluc, whose tactical speed puts him in the race; but on the strength of his Va Derby runner-up finish, a deserving choice.
Balance the Books
Kicked on well in the Solar Splendor, rebounding nicely from a couple disappointing efforts when tried on the Poly; on turf he has never been worse that third, and that includes the Breeder's Cup Juvenile Turf; top Beyer is just a 84, however; likely to improve second time off a layoff and with a quicker pace anticipated in this race than what unfolded in the Solar Splendor.
Main-track only entrant bombed in the Dwyer but is a good fit here if this race comes off the turf; few in here have done much on dirt, which would leave him in a position to capitalize; but tracks are loath to take graded stakes races off the turf, unless the course is unsafe from heavy rain.

Race 9

Sure Route (GB)
It seems like an ambitious placement off the claim but she ran big in defeat in the stakes in June; she has never won in the stakes and her last win at Epsom in 2011 was against 6 foes with a 97 Racing Post Rating; best career Beyer came for this pilot; needs very best.
Sea Island
Sent along on a moderate pace but she may be better off tracking and kicking; show horse in the 2013 opener took a $62K stakes at CD next out, then repeated in a $200K Delaware stakes with a 77 Beyer; proven locally at this trip, classy blood flows through the veins but she is far from a win machine; another slice?
Street Secret
Off poorly in stateside bow, wide in next and then she put it together; runner that was 4th in last broke through the gate and the runner that was last refused to break; like fact she has natural speed but there are couple of others that can pressure her; she was inching away late in last; toss another from this barn at own risk.
Cash for Clunkers
She may not have been at ease in last as she dropped her rider in the post parade; she didn't duck anybody last year including meeting a champion in the 2012 closer and key off her tough beat in the May finale last year and she is a player; all the winner 9/29 has done since is win 3 stakes including 2 Grade 1s; like fact she can lead or track and get it done; don't sell too short.
Moon Philly
Consistent, but she has been consistently off slowly at times too; race over the strip can't hurt, but her tactical speed will give her first run on the deep closers; place horse in the last win has lost twice since; must prove it on this circuit.
And Why Not
Four clear against a champ in last, and she was over 4 clear in the Graded effort two back; the local win came in racing debut at 6 and a half furlongs when she came from 7th to post a 64 Beyer; not the easiest spot for just a maiden winner.
Lady Cohiba
Something works for you, stick with it and that is what Clement has done as this gal won almost an identical race here last year at this very distance off the layoff; miss showed talent from Day One, has trained forwardly for this and she can show more speed than she did in her last effort; 5th finisher in last took a Grade 1 at Anita; next out and 7th finisher took a $78K AQU stakes; barn great getting runners to fire off the bench; look out.
Flashy American
Miss has a nice stalk and pounce style; the 6/6 place horse ran 5th splitting the field in the G3 Iowa Oaks; top last race Beyer in the resume, last 3 races have been solid; slight improvement and she will be a handful.

Race 10

His complete lack of early speed is always a concern, and not only has his overall form been unimpressive, but it would've been nice to have seen him show more in his first two starts this year; prefer to keep looking around in here.
Matt and Jesse
To this point in time, his better races have been run over dirt, and if he finishes in the top three, it will be the first time he's done that racing over turf; going to give the nod to others in this one, but willing to upgrade his chances if this race has to be moved to the main track.
Like the idea of him making his first start for the Maker barn after a 16k claim, and this gelding was up against it breaking from post 12 going 1 1/16m over the inner turf at Belmont Park in his latest start, posts 9-12 on the inner turf going 1 1/16m went 0-for-41 at the Belmont Spring meeting; he has a live look to him with Castellano getting the call.
El Season
Nicely bred veteran finds a decent spot to make his first start over the Saratoga turf, and he does appear to be well meant in this spot while getting a rider switch Velazquez; that said, he's another stone-cold closer to look at in here, and he has just one win in his last 17 starts going back through 2012.
He did some nice work racing over turf between August and October of last year and he figures to appreciate getting back over turf after staying in an off the turf event in his latest outing; note that Lezcano was aboard for the maiden breaker over this turf course a year ago.
250k purchase did some nice work racing for the Asmussen barn in 2012, but it's tough to gauge him in this spot after trying a jump event in his first start of 2013; prefer to just watch him today to try to get a feel for what he might be capable of going forward.
Elder Skatesman
With just two wins after 73 starts, including a 1-for-41 mark over turf, it's tough to place any confidence in this 10-year-old for the spot as he seeks his first win since July 2010; he has the look of an outsider.
Sam's Buck
He's returning to action on short rest, but he has every bit the look of a contender in this spot, and the 79 Beyer Speed Figure he earned for his latest performance is the best last race figure in this field; obvious threat while going out for a barn that has been very live at this meeting.
In My Eyes
Like the idea of this gelding making an aggressive bid for the early lead after breaking from the outside, and it really doesn't look like the early pace will heat up all that much unless Barzini or Verne decide to go for it right from the break; he hasn't posted a win since December 2011, 12 starts ago, but he's still a little interesting while dropping in with 20k claimers.
