DRF Plus Preview

Race 1

Free Mugatu
Although outsprinted early over a sealed, sloppy track, this colt came with a professional run to overwhelm the pacesetters; altered course to the inside in midstretch and picked them up without much fuss; must break from a tough inside post, but should get some speed to attack once again; not out of this with normal 2nd-out improvement.
Irish Sweepstakes
This filly has faced males before as she rushed up 4 wide to prompt the salty Wired Bryan before faltering late; battled with Aspree (finished 5th) early when dropped in with fillies, put that one to bed and romped by over 7 lengths; still takes a few strides before she makes that important final lead change; quick from the gate, but these are tougher.
Double Gold
Broke sweetly and pushed the leaders while 3 wide before taking over turning for home; didn't face much of a challenge while being driven home by Rosie; it's worth noting that 3 of the horses he best returned to lose at 5-2 odds or less (2 at 3-2 or less); may attempt to rate just a bit here and can't be ignored.
Sol the Freud
Nicely-bred colt broke a beat slow in the debut, but rushed up along the inside to grab the lead and took no prisoners thereafter; the runner-up from that race has potential and 3rd-finisher Howaboutwe returned to graduate; talented, but may face a tougher pace scenario this time around; factor.
Fractious before the debut, but the addition of blinkers allowed her to focus better in the off-the-turf affair; pressed co-chalk Carolinian from the outside before getting the better of that one in the stretch; she had an edge over that field as an MTO entrant and she didn't make her final lead change until the 1/16th pole; has speed, but prefer others on top.
Beat the aforementioned Carolinian with a burst of speed at Belmont and we can forgive the subsequent starts (Royal Ascot on turf and the Saratoga Special); after breaking awkwardly in the latter race, he seemed hard to handle and dropped well behind on the backstretch; he's quick with a good attack post and gets class relief; demand value.

Race 3

Caixa Eletronica
Hard hitting 8 year old turned back to sprint against some of the better one turners around here last time and was beaten just over 5 lengths in that shorter G1 heat; 3 time local winner draws inside for this but should find himself a lot closer early this time and today's added half panel figures to be right up his alley; weight assignment is no bargain but he did run one of his more impressive ones under 133 lbs. at Aqueduct last fall and his main rival today will also be heavily saddled; he's the one to hold off.
New York bred has won 21 races including half of his 6 local starts and enters this on a 5 race winning streak; 7 year old was pretty sharp in the good trip score in the restricted Morrissey early in the month and he certainly likes today's trip; managed well be this sharp barn, he'll catch a tough and classy foe drawn to his immediate inside here, but his tactical foot could give him the jump on that guy turning for home; they'll likely have to run him down late.
Maui Mark
Eight year old catches a couple of salty ribals in his return to dirt for a barn that doesn't do so well with this type; he showed good speed from the fence here last summer and was in some tough spots out West earlier in the year; don't know that he's as good as either of the top 2 but he does have the early foot to get involved from the bell and a wet track wouldn't hurt.
Private Tale
Gets a new pilot for his second crack at the local stand after running into a pretty good bunch on the turn back to this trip last time; 5 year old was entered as an AE to go in a turf stake yesterday at Delaware and is likely hoping for wet weather down there; he owns the back numbers to be competitive here and the price should be right, but he does have a series of recent weak tries on his resume; wasn't beaten much in either of his last 2 tries against today's foe Saginaw.
Steps up off the claim by an outfit that has had recent luck with this type right back; he got a solid clip in front of him last time and the clip should again be honest in here, but his best may only be enough to contend for a minor placing today.
Kingsford Drive
Didn't threaten late after making the pace from the fence in his return to the sod here last month and was again taken by a new outfit; barn does well on the surface switch and this guy did run well on the main track downstate earlier in the summer; catches a tough bunch, but maybe he'll have a little extra to offer late at this one turn trip and the price should be right.
Bernie the Maestro
Speedy gelding just missed lasting at the trip after making all the pace earlier in the meeting; he'll shed some weight for this one, but he'll move off the fence and there are a few rivals drawn inside him who figure to make things rough for him to find a comfortable spot early.
Where's Danny (IRE)
Took him 11 cracks to break his maiden but he quickly repeated to run his local record to a perfect 2 for 2; he gets some added ground which should help his run, but he catches a much tougher bunch in his first off the claim and will need to improve a handful of lengths to step with the bigger guys in here; have to side against the three peat.
Outside drawn gelding was a useful runner earlier in the year, picking up a handful of minor awards at big prices, but his recent couple of local tries were not very good; today's inside 2 have beaten him rather handily when they've met over the past few months; doesn't appear to be a very good fit here and looms another long price.

Race 4

Race 5

Trusted Choice
Defeated the 5th and 6th-place finishers from last who posted 69-64 Beyer speed figures in next-out SAR-25K and 20K-maiden claiming wins; comes off back-to-back career-best Beyers with the main issue whether he will be best at 1 Mile or shorter than today's distance; stays inside for the Buckwheat rematch.
Gridiron Great
Cuts back to his shortest-distance test since the Mile debut; was claimed off the troubled-7th when landing behind similar rivals; rider of last 3 starts stays here despite the trainer change; new barn wins 24% first-off-the-claim but the jockey-trainer combo are 0-for-13 since 2012.
Style change in last when ralllying; was claimed off a high-win percentage trainer and gets his 4th different rider in as many races both are not good win angles; gets the rematch with Trusted Choice after troubled in last; faded in his 2-back Mile-CD grasser so wondering if he gets back to his gate speed today and is rushed to the front here?
Captain Keon
The 6th and 7th-place finishers from last Beyered 71-66 in next-out GP-MSW and 25K-maiden claiming wins; 1-for-27 dirt-to-turf trainer since 2012 does not add to the appeal; adds blinkers off his 2nd straight last-place finish; his only firm-turf start was a near-miss finish-career best Beyer; the workout for this did not stand out as an improvement but the barn wins 35% with similar 31-60-day layoff runners; clearly has some wakeup angles to ponder here.
Boardwalk Baron
Shown zero gate speed in 2 sprints so hopes the added distance today will help the cause; it's his 1st start in a maiden claimer today but the trainer since 2012 is 0-for-16 with this angle; new rider is his 3rd in as many races which is typically not a good-win angle but Castellano wins 26% for the trainer since 2012.
High-percentage 1st-off-the-claim trainer adds to the appeal but he cuts back to his shortest-distance test since April reuniting with the rider from that event when seemingly relishing added ground; beaten favorite has improved since Lasix was added; the 3-back winner repeated with an 83 Beyer taking an AP-50K claimer then repeated in an AP alw. with a 79.
Ella's Kitten
Great sign that his 1st race off the claim represents a career-best Beyer but it did not produce a strong late kick like usual; has not raced this short of a distance in the USA and seemingly wants more than 1 Mile to uncork his late punch; 0-for-17 SAR jockey-trainer combo since 2012 does not add to the appeal.
Claimed off a high-win percentage trainer which is not a good win angle; big race off the bench 1st time on turf stretching out and if able to repeat that effort would be a force from bell to finish here in a field lacking a lot of pace he could benefit from being loose on an easy lead; the 2-back runner-up finisher Beyered 81 in his next-out BEL-MSW win.
Just has not fired back to his 3-back career-best Beyer at 1 Mile on yielding turf; late runner reunites with the debut rider winning 23% for the trainer since 2012; the barn yields 25% MSW-to-maiden claiming winners; needs to bounce back big off his 2nd-straight favored loss.
More Debt
Ran even worse than his 14-1 debut odds when middle-moving then ending up last vs. this same group; remains drawn widest which obviously was not his liking in last; the workouts for this are not inspiring however the 20%-maiden claiming barn wins 19% with 2nd-time starters and is eligible to improve today with the career debut behind him.

Race 6

E Z Passer
Cuts back a bit after earning her best number since last year while tackling cheaper over the local main track and she'll switch to a solid journeyman pilot for this; mare does catch a field with a lot of early lick, but she'll face a much better group in this spot and will need to keep moving forward to have a say for even a minor share.
Delightful Quality
Should be tighter with her return from the freshening behind her and she did find some trouble in that restricted stake placing; she's tactically inclined and that positional foot should help her sit a good spot from this inside draw; looks to be the one they'll have to beat.
Five Star Momma
Set the pace in the last out restriced stake but didn't have much left for the drive after running against the grain of the racetrack; she did equal a career best number in that heat and maybe with a hard send she's able to clear this bunch; doesn't win often, but the price warrants her a look.
Alexandra's Grace
Ran big in defeat at 7 panels in her first crack at the level here last month; she goes for a barn that does well second back from the break and the cut back to 7 panels should benefit her; lightly raced filly certainly has a right to improve on the figure scale and a move forward would make her a threat.
Lion D N A
Shipper boasts a solid local breeze a couple of weeks back for her return from a brief freshening for an outfit that hasn't done much with its limited runners at the stand; she did beat cheaper with a solid number 2 back at Churchill and maybe it was the wet track that did her in last time; maybe for a share.
Sophomore is perfect outside the stakes ranks and now she'll turn back to the trip of her debut maiden score in Florida this weekend; she has plenty of early lick and adds the hood for this so expect she'll find herself up with the pacesetters early as she tackles older for the initial time; contender is working quite well locally for this.

Race 8

Teen Pauline
Grade 1 stakes placed filly ran well in her turf debut in her latest outing, even if race shape was in her favor, but this race does figure to have a stronger early pace, and her ability to rate and finish might be put to the test; Velazquez has won with 23 of 59 (39%) mounts for this barn at the current meeting.
Unbelievable Dream
She put together some sharp winning performances in her first four career starts, but since capturing a G3 win at Keeneland in April, she hasn't been quite the same; maybe her latest effort is a sign that she's coming back around and it does appear that she'll get a fast early pace to assist her late running style.
Miss Lamour
She took it right at a field in her first start over this turf course in her latest outing and like to see that she's turning back in distance for this; however, she doesn't seem likely to grab the early lead in here, and if she does, she'll have to run hard to get it; not counting her out of it, but others entice more.
Native Bombshell
War Front has proven to be a strong influence as a turf sire and this filly looked good in going the distance in her turf debut when last seen; have to be a little concerned when seeing that she isn't likely going to have the early advantage, but this lightly raced 3-year-old is eligible to have plenty more to show us.
Promise Me More
One of two signed on in here for the Asmussen barn and this miss is making her first start for them; her complete lack of early speed is a little bothersome, but the early pace in here figures to be swift, and it's interesting to see what she did in her first two career starts over turf while facing stakes competition.
Midnight Watch
This barn has been extremely live with their turf starters at this meeting, and judging from the form that this filly has displayed, and her recent workouts, it looks like they have another live one to send out in this spot; she does have to be careful to avoid an early pace dispute, but she has the look of a top contender.
Bella Castani
She failed as a favorite in her two most recent races, but she ran pretty well when finishing second to Effie Trinket in her latest outing, and that rival exited that race to finish 2nd in a 100k turf stakes here on 8/10 with an 85 Beyer; stakes winning miss merits her share of respect in this spot.
She usually shows up and runs her race but her best effort might be a cut or two below what some of the others in here are capable of; maybe a minor award is within her reach, but going to look in another direction for the top spot.
Sister Ginger
She a stakes winner over dirt and turf, and it looks like her connections must be very pleased with the way that she's doing to ship her here for this; over the past six months, Napravnik has won with 27 of 73 (37%) mounts for Asmussen, including 6 of 15 (40%) over turf.
Elusive Fate
She ran well from off the pace in her career debut over a sloppy main track here, and like to see what she did in her only other dirt start over a fast track at Churchill Downs two starts ago; that said, there's legitimate dirt form in the main body of this race and she's going to need her best effort to date to beat this field.

Race 9

Powder Springs
Shades off, but they were off for the debut when runner showed brief speed; stakes winning 7 for 30 dam earned over $260K, was out of hte money in only try on turf; 6 of 7 siblings won; kin Mercy Matters won 8 times on grass, top sibling Haynesfield took a Grade 1, banked over $1.3 million; could at least muddle pace.
Southern Safari
Nothing wrong with the Beyer progression; backers can point to the fact there is a double turf winner in the family; he fits on the Beyer scale, has been closer to the winner at the end in every race since debut, should be right there.
Mise En Place
Beaten double digits in 3 of 4 and soph sure caved in going long in last; the 7/13 show horse took a maiden $12.5K seller at Finger Lakes next out and the place horse 7/13 cashed at this level here 7/22 with a 65 Beyer beating rival on direct outside; the sibling that tried grass lost 10 times on turf; tough to pull the trigger here.
Mr. William
Lewis thought enough of this guy to take him back and note the show horse in the debut graduated next out in a MSW at Tampa and eventually beat N1X foes marathoning at Keeneland on 4/20 with an 87 Beyer; runner was tabbed at 5-1 on the morning line here Wednesday in a turf route for this price when drawing post 3; dam was unraced; all 3 siblings won on grass including over $100K earner Fast Time; he has lost ground late every time.
It's Huge
Arguably his 2 best efforts came in the debut and the return effort in May so he has a shot to fire fresh here; at least one sibling won once on grass; capable barn due to get rolling.
Jump Johnny Jive
Failed vs. softer multiple times, has very limited speed, has pretty much just went through the motions his entire career; in for $10K less than purchase price; can't spin this form in the right direction.
Wood On the Fire
Troubled 2 back but he has only beaten 4 horses in his career; 5 for 13 dam earned over $100K, was third in best start on grass; 7 of 8 siblings won; several won on grass including near $200K earner Myakka; like the series of drills since last; could improve here.
Xchanger 0 for 1 with first-time turfers; multiple Grade 3 winning 4 for 18 sire banked nearly $800K, never turfed; SW 4 for 23 dam banked over $300K, was out of the money in only try on turf; all 6 sibs won; one cashed once on grass; the 5/15 winner clicked right back in a $20K claimer, then beat $25K optional foes here on 8/14 with an 87 Beyer; must be left in the exotic mix.
My New Hope
Eased in 2 of 3 and the other start was dismal; 10 for 82 dam banked $135K, lost 6 times on grass; all 3 sibs won; the one that tried grass was out of the money 3 times on turf; try to get a good look at him before taking a swing.
Ride a Song
Hung wide on a surface he may not prefer; show horse in last graduated for this very price next out, place horse was 2nd a length in a maiden $40K claimer and the winner repeated in a $20K claimer here with a 71 Beyer; SP 2 for 19 dam was turf only; lone half bro won once, a dirt sprint; he's a threat off race 2 back.
Gelding has been knocking on the door, is overdue to blow it off the hinges; a bit more keen to drill on the 22nd; legit contender, far from a cinch after 22 beats.
Foggy Road
Beaten by the chalk in last when runner was caught 4 wide and the half-mile pole; at least backers can say one sibling banked over $150K; if you figure he was just overmatched in last and key off the July race, he fits very nicely here.
Streets of Fire
Soph seems more comfortable going long; note wraps re-added for the last 3; would expect him to be in the picture very late if at all.
