Closer Looks: Saratoga August 12, 2013

DRF Plus Preview

Race 1

De Price
Can be excused the last defeat as this horse is not one for an off track; turned in a respectable showing the last time he attempted seven-eighths but now must deal with burdensome inside slot; does have a streak of seconditis in his nature and may rally too late for the party.
Newcomer to Saratoga received a nice tune-up in a sprint affair in Indiana; believe it or not, he is a G1 winner (scored in the Champagne Stakes at Belmont years ago); has been successful at this particular trip and some of that back class may resurface now.
Martini Madness
In his first start under these silks, he turned in a decent effort recently but the fact remains he has never raced beyond six furlongs and that puts him at a distinct disadvantage today; best Beyer, by far, was achieved over a muddy track and he may need such a course condition in order to upset this crew.
Charlie's Quest
The gelding has been primarily a route runner for most of his career but today marks his first venture for this expert trainer and perhaps the turnback in distance will be within reach; this runner did win his last sprint attempt, only to be disqualified for bearing out.
Inflation Target
Exits a 6-furlong test that was way above average in pace quality and final time; sole try at seven-eighths was here last summer and, unfortunately, against a repeat winner (he was also compromised by the rail slot in that defeat); can prove to be the right value play now.
This colt has won via the turf-to-dirt method in the past; second start following a vacation angle has also been successful; two previous tries at this trip were both failures while a maiden; worth some consideration if the price is right.
Lost significant ground in his local debut of 2 weeks ago; picks up Rosario who has done very well for these connections and draws a favorable outer attack slot; should be able to launch a fair rally from midpack as a result.
Dan and Sheila
This playable longshot is an interesting item here as one of his best lifetime efforts was at the course and distance (that victory last season followed a defeat at 9 furlongs); on a fast track, he can be a surprising late force if the pace is proper.

Race 2

Hailey's Star
Has just 2 other starts at longer than 6F and those Mile races produced 4th and 5th-place finishes; saves ground from mid-pack then makes one run; today is her 1st SAR-dirt start off the worst finish of her career; the April winner and runner-up finishers posted 83-82 Beyer speed figures in next-out PIM-100K stakes and optional-claiming wins; July 31 workout for this was not very enticing.
I Jus Wana Hav Fun
Both win pictures on the lead but wasn't able to make the frontend in last pair; 2-back faded badly behind the runner-up finisher who Beyered 90 in her next-out SAR allowance win; lone race at today's distance saw her beat 1 runner home but it was in a stakes; seems the one to catch here.
Kaitlyns Cat
6%-winning fresh trainer off the 61-day absence and will face winners for the 1st time which is often any runner's toughest assignment; late runner scored at longer on a wet track; a less-than-fast oval would move her up but will be taking a wait and see approach.
Hillary D
Mixed reviews from her prior-layoff races idle 58 days for this; last looks better since the runner-up finisher Beyered 66 in a next-out ELP-30K-maiden claiming win; like Kaitlyns Cat would have to pass a major class test to upset facing winners for the 1st time.
So Blessed
Beat one runner home in her 1st start off the claim; deep closer never got rolling 1st time on SAR dirt; was purchased off a co-Beyer Top; the added distance today seems well within her scope but her only race past 6.5F was a distant-show finish in a stakes; off last must show more.
Bin Elusive
Cuts back to the shortest distance test since her career debut; won 2 of her last 3 dirt starts scoring from both on the lead and off the pace; she posted a career-best speed figure in her 2nd start off the re-claim beating the 2-back runner-up finisher who Beyered 78 in a next-out AP-45K-claiming win; projects to sit just off I Jus Wana Hav Fun from the gate before getting 1st run on the closers; seems capable of big things on her best day.
Seven Dreams
Exits her lowest Beyer since March racing 2nd time off the claim; off-the-pace type has been defeated twice in the last 3 races when favored; finished 3rd to the 2-back winner who made it 3 in a row next out in an FL-50K stakes with a 77 Beyer; the 3-0-0-0 SAR mark and recent loss to I Jus Wana Hav Fun suggest we rank her a notch below the top contenders.
Elusive Act
Claimed off a high-win-percentage barn which is not a good win angle; new barn rarely claims (0-for-1 since 2012 first-off-the-buy) as she exits her lowest Beyer since November; beat the 2-back show runner a next-out 69 speed figure PRX-starter alw. winner.

Race 3

Mystic Love
She's a stakes winner sprinting over turf, and even though her route attempts haven't been bad by any means, she might be at her best as a late running grass sprinter; April foal is making her first start since April, and the rail post might not impact her all that much as she'll likely take right back from the break.
Jewel of a Cat
This barn doesn't ship to Saratoga all that much, and that might be reason to believe that they feel that this miss is ready to give a good account of herself; however, she is going to need a career best run to beat these; winner from latest won next out at Mth on 7/21 going 6f in a 61k stakes with an 85 Beyer.
She caused crowding soon after the start and was disqualified from her turf debut in her latest outing, but that was still a sharp performance, and the next time she runs a bad race will be the first time; a series of sharp looking workouts at Keeneland suggest that she's ready for her return to action.
Maybe she just didn't bring her "A" game to the table in her latest start but thought she should have at least been second that day after breaking sharp and setting a sensible early pace; note that she finished behind today's rival Jewel of a Cat in that race; Lezcano has won with 17 of 64 (27%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Magical Moon
Grade 1 stakes placed miss has been absolutely dominant in her two starts over turf at today's distance and she hauls the best last race Beyer Speed Figure with her into this affair; runner up from latest won next out here on 6/26 going 5 1/2f over turf vs. 25k OPC's with a 90 Beyer.
Little Sandy
Sire wins with approximately 15% of his turf starters and this is the first foal from a minor stakes winning dam who won 3 of 17 starts for 123k, including 2 of 13 turf starts for 106k; this is a tough test for her first turf start but she's done little wrong in her first three starts and she hails from a sharp barn.
I'm Mom's Favorite
This race doesn't look like it has to fall apart if it has to be moved to the main track, and if this miss can bounce back from a sub par performance, and perform the way she did two and three starts back, she can have a say in the outcome.
Pow Wow Wow
She has a G2 stakes placing to her credit and she might appreciate turning back in distance for her second start back from a layoff; leaning toward others for the top spot, but certainly wouldn't consider her a shocker if she was able to get the job done.
Currency Union
Respect the fact that she's done some nice work since moving into this barn but this has to be considered a tough spot for her to try to tackle stakes competition; she looks like more of an outsider.

Race 4

Kitstrickortreat Bothered early twice, rail run in opener less than thrilling; dam lost 7 times; 3 of 4 siblings won; 2 tried grass to no avail, one banked over $120K; hustling bug hired today, expect better effort. Collaborator He got away with soft splits and still gave it up; dam third in best result; one of 4 siblings won; that runner, My Magic Moment, took 2 of 19, won a stakes, banked nearly $150K, was turf only; trainer has spotted them great all year, don't count out. Red Shogun Utopia 3 for 51 with first-time turfers; sire took 2 Group 1s in Japan at 2, banked nearly $5 million, was second in best turf result; stakes winning 2 for 11 dam handled grass; 4 of 5 siblings won; two were double winners on grass including over $120K earner Royal Prana; face it, he has not raised a gallop so far; at least the last race came back okay as the 4th and 6th finishers took MSW races next out and 2 others were in the money; passing. Leroy Jr. This $150,000 purchase is carefully placed for barn great with returnees like this; Grade 3 winning 1 for 9 dam earned over $130K, won on grass; several winners in tree including 4-time grass winner and over $200K earner Westside Corral; respect everything from this barn. Insighting Hung wide in last but key off the debut and he must be given legit chance; dam took one sprint, was 2nd in best turf moment; lone half bro took one dirt sprint, never turfed; Rosario got a chance to figure him out; rates long look in all the slots. National Buck Goes second time Lasix after an improved effort; SP 4 for 30 dam banked over $200K; both sibs won; both cashed on grass including over $80K earner Sam's Buck; he's starting to figure it out. Without Regard One of his better efforts came long on grass; a half bro took debut at 2 on dirt, lost next 5; runner has a shot to show more speed on the stretch out; can't fault those that are gun shy with the double chalk flop visible. Downgoesfrazier Nearly TKO'ed foes two back and the winner that day repeated in a $20K claimer, then won again 8/4 at the shore in a $16K seller; a couple of siblings tried grass to no avail but one did bank nearly $200K; look for rider to put him into the race from the sound of the bell. Chang's Secret At least he got a feel of competition; 3 for 30 dam banked $65K, won on grass twice; several multiple race winners in the family including G3 placed double grass winner and over $180K earner Mrs. M; a couple of decent drills since debut; must hurry. Saltine Warrior Wild Desert 1 for 19 with first-time turfers; sire took the Queen s Plate, won twice at 2, banked over a million, won on grass once; dam 0 for 5; several winners in the family including over $150K grass earner Bishop of Nola; show horse in last graduated next out in this league with a 70 Beyer; don't ignore. Sun Worshipper Backers got a nice thrill at 35-1, runner just had nothing left when it counted; dam was unraced; 5 of 8 sibs won including grass winner and over $200K earner Royal Sighting; homebred at least showed he has some semblance of speed. Solengo Wraps for last 4 as runner has yet to break a sweat; backers can point to the fact that kin Fizzano earned over $100K on grass; looking elsewhere for a key top horse. A Better Tomorrow Got a feel of the surface and if you figure he just needed last, no reason he won't move forward; the family is solid and includes an over $150K earner; he's burned some cash, but should be around the wire. Bernardo Colt kind of runs the same race every time; a few winners in the tree but none were special; a slice may be the ceiling here. King Wando Wide from marooned slot in the debut, ran well in last despite having mud kicked in his face; dam 0 for 5; 4 of 5 siblings won; stakes winning top earner In Te Domine earned over $135K; another threat in a wide-open fray.

Race 5

Sire 66-599 (11%) 2yos, 21-187 (11%) 1st-turf; 1st starter from unplaced dam (0-1 at 2); dam 1/2 2yo G3 SW router Aly's Alley (902K, 3-9 at 2, 3-21 turf); barn 1-9 (11%, $1.17 ROI) past 5 years 2yos dirt/turf; 7/22 work matches Moves Your Soul (6th FTS SMSW dirt 25 Beyer 7/31); match for Saratoga Special entrant in debut on dirt; must show more

Sum Superstar
By G1 sprint SW sire (1.2M, 5-6 at 2, 2-8 turf) that is 2-22 (9%) with 2yo FTS, this is 1st turf starter; 1st starter from turf winning dam (166K, 3-15 turf); 3rd dam SP Hard Freeze (255K, 3-5 at 2, 0-2 turf); barn 4-6 (67%, $6.48 ROI) past 5 years 2nd-time 2yos dirt/turf MSW sprint (1-2, 50%, $3.00 ROI Spa); chased promising one on dirt; can improve.
Due Diligence
1/2 G3 SP 2yo Ocasta (84K, 1-6 turf, 1st-turf wnnr) by 6% 2yo FTS, 14% 1st-turf sire; SW dam (146K, 2-5 at 2, 0-1 turf) has 4 wnnrs/4 rnnrs (1-3 with 2yos, 2-2 turf, 2 first-turf wnnrs); dam 1/2 G3 SP router Morada Key (180K, 0-7 at 2, 1-4 turf); barn 3-8, $3.68 pst 5 yrs 2yo FTS MSW turf sprint; 7/22 work matches True Courage (57 turf Beyer).

Race 6

Simplie Sinister
Far back in that first run but perhaps blinker addition will help her focus; her sire won the Kentucky Derby and 2.53 million overall; the dam won 2 of 27 starts and 32K; among the winning siblings is 377K earner Cativa.
Has shown only brief speed on the turf thus far; her sire twice won the Breeders' Cup Classic and 6.42 million; the dam won 3 of 13 and 87K; sib to 160K earner Alienation; latest breeze from the gate was very respectable.
She turned in a sharp placing in her local debut, first outing under new management; lands into a field with not much in the way of pace opposition and that will be to her benefit; exacta recommendation regardless of soil condition.
Toast to Ashley
Dons the blinkers after failing in her first stretchout; her sire won the G1 Forego and 580K while the dam involved was unraced; winning siblings include 206K bankroller Call the Marines; can awaken with important drop from special weights.
Saratoga Sunrise
One of 3 in the field who can upgrade suddenly with an equipment change; her sire won a G2 and 479K while the dam scored in 3 of 15 appearances earning 80K; sib to 160K earner Ballynoe.
Did not have a clean getaway when beaten by some of these same ladies last month; that marked her first effort of the year and she did show some promising gate speed last season; picks up Maragh who has booted home several longshots for these connections.
Darnley Bay
On vacation for just over a year, she drops several rungs down the ladder in this comeback; of interest is the pace prompting ability she displayed in her route tests; shows weekly intervals to the workout pattern, a favorable sign.
Draws widest again but finished right behind Inaflash in their last encounter; unfortunately, that key opponent might be able to get away with softer fractions today and that may limit this filly's chances for a reversal; obvious trifecta prospect nonetheless.

Race 7

Winless in 12 straight starts; last win was in 2011 on SAR dirt in a 100K-claimer at today's 7F distance; 1st-time Johnny V to ride as the win rider and pilot of last 5 starts sides with fresh Frazil for this; 3 of 4 wins occurred racing from off the pace; saves ground then makes 1 run.
Bernie the Maestro
His last dirt start was a gate-to-wire career-best Beyer going long on GP-fast dirt; reunites with the win rider for this; SW with Rosario at today's distance; 2012-SAR-7F dirt winner in gate-to-wire fashion; worked a bullet for this and figures to be a major force up front with Nevada Kid and The Truth and K G; exits his best speed figure since January which adds to the appeal.
Exits his lowest Beyer since November, 2011, on FL dirt; the 22 minor awards on his resume are alarming enough than toss in the last-place finish in his return to SAR dirt; winless in 18 races since a June, 2012, BEL-dirt 14K claimer at 6.5F; a tough call.
Keep Me Informed
Deep closer hopes for a pace meltdown; new barn plunked down $62,500 for this 6-year-old while the trainer is 0-for the last-8 first-off-the-buy; reunites with the 3-back BEL-Mile win rider; last looks better since the runner-up finisher Beyered 93 in his next-out SAR-optional claiming win.
The Truth and K G
Does his best work when breaking well; his career-best Beyer was on the lead at longer than this; away more than 10 weeks since beating the 5th and 6th-place finishers who Beyered 93-86 in next-out BEL-35K-claiming and SAR-optional claiming wins.
Nevada Kid
All 3 wins right on the lead he seems the one to catch with Bernie the Maestro and The Truth and K G expected to provide early gas; lone-SAR race was a far-back finish reuniting with the rider from that effort his 2nd-lowest Beyer ever; career-best Beyer was in the mud so would appreciate less-than-fast footing here; try to catch me.
3 of 13 wins right on the lead noting his best work is settling in just outside the pace which today is Nevada Kid, Bernie the Maestro and The Truth and K G; beaten-betting favorite has been working well for his 1st SAR start since a last-place finish; won fresh here in 2011 at longer; a great sign that the regular rider and a 6-time win pilot who had other options remains here.
Hello Lover
Deep closer exits a career-best Beyer over the SAR strip at today's distance; gets massive class relief for this after breaking slowly in last; consistent sort hasn't run a bad race since September when making his turf debut; the one they all must hold off in deep stretch.

Race 8

Laurie's Rocket
It's been all about Oaklawn Park for this guy this year; handled rather easily by the rival on the direct outside two back and the Brown runner also had his number; the local win came in the MSW win going 5 and a half with a 64 Beyer; must come out running to avoid getting shuffled.
Right to Vote
Brings speed to the party and you can make a legit case he's the speed of the speed; even if someone else in intent on the top, this guy rates too; he did only beat 3 horses two back and he was kind of dueled into submission in last; only beaten a half in the local debut in first start in a MSW with an 81 Beyer; long gone?
Candyman E
Gelding has a penchant for finding the wire and he is repeatedly proven off the pine; winner of the 2013 opener took a Grade 2 in next, was third beaten less than 2 in the G1 Carter, out of the money twice; contention goes long.
Strapping Groom
Nothing like a quick turn on an investment and Jacobson just makes it look easy off the claim; pro could have just been overmatched in last but when he brings his A game, and a 104 Beyer is the A game, he's tough; needs a rebound effort.
Hardened Wildcat
Examining the conditions of this race, this guy fits the best with Candyman E close behind; over 3 clear in the May effort and although he has natural speed, he can track and still get it done; would think long and hard before taking too short a number here.
Leave of Absence
Goes from one good barn to another but he has never won a stakes; runner upset only 3 runners in the dead heat 3 back but he doesn't have to be 7th early on today; this rider up for the last win but runner will need help up front; might need softer to shine.
Pretty nice effort off the extended layoff and he was caught 5 wide in the process; far from disgraced in the 2012 closer and like the series of drills since the return; place horse in the last win cashed next out in a $62.5K optional, then won a Grade 3 in Texas with a 100 Beyer; every right to improve.

Race 9

Sokitumi Samurai
His latest race was his best effort over turf from three starts, but he looks like he might be better off seeing this race get moved to the main track, and the rail post going 5 1/2f over turf here can be very tricky.
Don't Say No
He might have hung a little bit, but his latest race was a fine runner-up finish in a race that saw him rally 4-5 wide into the stretch before coming up just short; when seeing how well he's run sprinting over turf in his career, he has the look of a legitimate threat against these.
Special Selection
Hook and Ladder has been a poor influence as a turf sire and it doesn't appear that this gelding is capable of getting the better of the top contenders in here on his best day; runner up from latest won next out here on 8/3 going 1 1/16m over turf vs. 20k OPC's with an 81 Beyer.
Volcano Run
The shortest race he's run in his career is 7 1/2f, and even though it's a little interesting to see the Rice barn send him out in a turf dash right after a claim, prefer to see what he can do sprinting over turf before backing him.
Radiohead (GB)
He's a G2 winner sprinting over turf prior to arriving in America and he even earned a G1 stakes placing in a turf dash racing overseas; he sports the best last race Beyer Speed Figure in here and he appears to be very well meant in his first start for the Jacobson barn after a 20k claim while turing back in distance.
Beer Is Good
A little concerned with the way that he's struggled to maintain a forward gear late in his recent races, but he has a good deal of early speed to throw at these, and if anyone in here is going to go gate-to-finish, this looks like the one.
Santo Gato
His recent form is tough to back but he brings some early zip with him and there was a time when he was capable of showing up with a competitive 5 1/2f over turf against competition of this caliber.
Crown the Chief
Maybe his better races are a thing of the past but he hasn't raced over turf since April 2011 and a number of his turf start have been solid performances; the last time he was seen racing over turf was in an N1X event at Gulfstream Park going 5f, a race that saw him finish fourth, three and three quarter lengths behind Varsity.
Fly Ride
Respect the fact that this is an outfit that does some of their better work with turf starters, but this appears to be a tough spot for this gelding to land in, and it looks like Lezcano might have opted to pilot another in here.
Regal Strike
There are a number of horses in the main body of this race that have shown the ability to run their race over dirt, so if this runner gets to go in this spot, he'll likely be in pretty tough; winner from latest won next out at Mth on 8/4 going 6f vs. 20-18k N2Y claimers with an 82 Beyer and 3rd finisher won next out at Mth on 7/21 going 6f vs. 5k claimers with a 58 Beyer.

Race 10

Surprise Squall
Stakes placed miss had every right to need her latest start after a long layoff, and she did carry a lot of ground around the second turn, but it still would have been nice to have seen her offer up a little bit more through the stretch that day.
Another Please
She looks like she's heading in the right direction as she gets ready to make her third start back from a layoff, but feel that it's fair to question if her best effort is strong enough to come out on top in this spot; winner from latest won next out here on 8/7 going 1 1/16m over turf vs. 35k OPC's with an 85 Beyer.
Chick in Slacks
She gave a fine account of herself in a late running performance two starts ago after a layoff, but that might be about as good as it gets for her, and she will need a stronger run to beat this field; note that you have to go back to October 2010 to find her latest win.
This barn has had a shockingly quiet 2013 and they've started this meeting 0-for-14; however, they can get the job done with turf starters and it looks like they are getting agressive with this mare while making a serious bid at their first win of 2013 Saratoga season.
Lido Palace has been a poor influence as a turf sire and this mare looks like she's going to need a career best effort to have a chance at getting over on the top contenders in this spot; this barn has been known to jump up with turf starters when least expected, but going to look toward others.
Mess in a Dress
Her better races have been run over dirt and her three turf starts haven't been anywhere near strong enough to suggest that she can prove to be a threat in this spot; runner up from latest won next out here on 8/8 going 6 1/2f vs. 20k claimers with a 73 Beyer.
Beautiful Risk
Of the horses coming out of the seventh race here on July 26, he looks like the one to focus on as he traveled well through the stretch to record a solid runner-up finish; however, those rivals aren't his biggest concern in this spot.
Glamour Galore
She has at least mild appeal in this spot as she gets ready to make her first start routing over turf and like to see the improvement she showed in her second turf attempt in her latest outing; Ortiz has won with 15 of 45 (33%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
G. A. Empress
She has just a single victory from 33 starts going back through 2012 and there isn't anything in her recent form to suggest that she's about to show up with a competitive effort against these.
Town Flirt
Although her two most recent starts since being returned from a layoff haven't been anywhere near her best, she appears to be the biggest threat to Edie while taking a sharp drop in class; her best effort makes her a legitimate threat and this barn has been very live at this meeting.
Delightful Dawn
She needs to see a scratch from the main body of this race to draw in and feel that helped Cohen give her every opportunity to get the job done in her latest start and it's just tough to give her the nod over Beautiful Risk after watching that race.
Pauper's Queen
Late running miss is two-deep on the Also Eligible list and she's going to find herself in a tough spot if she draws into this race; in a race where the winner is likely to earn a Beyer Speed Figure around 80, her career best figure is a 69.
Nuffsaid Nuffsaid
There are a few horses in the main body of this race, and even Delighful Dawn, who can prove to be players in here if this race comes off the turf; this miss is only two races removed from a decent run and the runner up from her latest race won next out here on 8/8 going 6 1/2f vs. 20k claimers with a 73 Beyer.
Wise Choice
She has just three wins after 81 career starts and she's been beaten by a number of today's rivals in her recent starts; she's going to need to find a way to step up her game to prove to be a threat.
