Closer Looks: Del Mar August 17, 2013

DRF Plus Preview

Race 1

Indygo F M A
Miss has been knocking on the door, is overdue to blow it off the hinges; 5/17 show horse graduated next out in this league at Arlington, then beat N1X foes there 7/27 with a 67 Beyer for Catalano; slightly shorter trip could be just what the good doctor ordered.
Carefully placed since posting the career Beyer; note gap in published moves till 7/29, wonder if she had a setback; dam won once, a dirt sprint; both siblings won including stakes placed turf winner and over $200K earner Brilliant Future; miss looks well intentioned.
Irish Myth
High Demand 0 for 6 with first-time turfers, 3 for 17 with debuters; sire took 5 of 6, earned nearly $200K, was unbeaten in 4 turf races; dam was unraced; this is her first to race; lean toward watching one.
Woodys Wharf
Fans even backed off in last after the 69 and the third; she has a shot to grow into her skin as kin to Leprechaun Kid, who won a Grade 2 here on grass, banked over $500K; could at least muddle the pace.
Playful Humor
She seemed in the right spot last time, just quickened too late; the 6th and 8th finishers in last took maiden claimers next out and the 7th finisher took an MSW at Santa Rosa with a 69 Beyer; class is represented in the tree by Marsh Side, who banked over $2.3 million racing around the world on grass and everything; look for rider to be aggressive from the get go.
Jazz On The Beach (GB)
Name fits the local surroundings, she has the two races to draw from and nothing wrong with getting a feel of the course; must be left in the exotic equation at least.
Ginger Tap
She looms the long-fused half of the Drysdale pair; educated in the debut, she could have sulked in last after the slow start but she put her head down and tried; place horse in last graduated at this level, then made it 3 for 3 beating N1X foes with a 99 Beyer; stakes winning 5 for 16 dam loved grass, banked nearly $150K; 2 of 3 siblings won but both tried grass to no avail; a clean start and it could be a whole new ballgame.

Race 2

Native Empress
Firster was sired by Cindago who won 2 of 3 starts and 98K (his offspring have scored in 6 of 30 debuts); the dam won 3 of 17 and 44K; among the winning siblings is 20K bankroller Precious Is Gold.
Kantina Kowgirl
Game to capture the place way back in May; her sire is top-notch sprinter Kodiak Kowboy who amassed 1.66 million; the dam went 1 for 3 earning 36K; winning siblings include 337K winner Roi Charmant.
Writer Fever
Beginner hails from G3 victor Stormin Fever who netted 484K and whose progeny are 31 for 434 as far as winning first time out; the dam won 4 of 21 and 66K; winning siblings include 107K earner Arctic Sonnet.
Adds blinkers after trouble debut run of a month ago; her sire won 1.69 million including G1 success; the dam involved was unraced; this is her only foal to make it to the starting gate; can improve suddenly with the new equipment.
My Aunt Annie
Descendants of Dixie Chatter, a G1 winner who garnered 464K, are zero for 12 in their initial attempt; the dam was without a victory in 4 tries; winning siblings include 517K earner Shadow of Illinois.
Cal Gal
Respectable first effort last month when pressing the issue until the last furlong; her sire won a G1 and 557K in total; the dam went 3 for 16 earning 107K; this is her only foal to make it to the races; worth some follow-up today.
Finished strong in her first test earlier this month; see Writer Fever, above, for information about the same sire; the dam won 1 of 9 and 24K; among the winning siblings is 31K earner Kiwi Mistress; obvious true contender.
Warren's Jen Fizz
Her sire went zero for 4 in his career and progeny of Affirmative are 1 for 38 in their first attempt; the dam was without a tally in 7 races; winning siblings include 40K earner Warren's Lover; shows ordinary works this month.
Good Proof
The sire won 1.29 million including a G1 score (offspring of Idiot Proof have won 1 of 2 debuts); the dam won 2 of 11 and 10K and this is her only foal to compete; shows steady drills from the gate of late.
Miss Loujean
Has flashed decent early speed thus far but now must deal with this outpost; her sire won 6 of 16 races and 142K; the dam won 9 of 16 and 363K; among the winning siblings is 20K earner Attempted Date.

Race 3

Hard Buns
Her synthetic-surface unveiling was a victory; claimed off the graduation and always a good sign when the rider stays on a runner even when they change barns; races 1st time for a 22%-winning 1st-off-the-purchase trainer; figures to stalk the speed while saving ground then hopes to pass the class test.
Chestnut Moon
Winless on synthetic surfaces including latest when pressing the pace before fading her 2nd poor effort on DMR synthetic during career; her lone win was stalking on turf but posted her best Beyer on dirt; seems synthetic may be her least preferred surface.
Miz Wounded Knee
Was screaming out for more distance in last and gets it here; sire won just 1-of-4 dirt routes but it was the Grade 1 Champagne; dam went 1-for-4 in dirt routes and 0-for-2 going long on grass; her only other foal to race 2-for-6 Orlianis did not race past 7F.
Warren's Lorie S.
Both DMR-synthetic starts were double-digit length defeats including latest 3 weeks ago; the dirt-win rider lands on Hard Buns; late runner simply did not show any punch in the lane in last; tough call here as she seems best on the main track seeking her 1st-synthetic exacta placement.
Showed up with front wraps on in last then posted her 2nd-consecutive career-low Beyer; trailed throughout in her last Mile race while lacking spark since the barn change; her only win was right on the lead and did not see anything close to that type of gate speed in recent losses.
Jaya Roo
Stalked the speed nicely in the upset score 1st time going long and 1st time at Del Mar; has been a new horse with the hood; the blinkers added in 2 races ago helped her produce back-to-back Beyer-career Tops; high-percentage repeat trainer adds to the appeal for another sharp try.
Sharp Bella
Reunites with the win rider as she stalked the speed nicely then drew away like a good thing on wet dirt; 7th, 8th and 8th are her last 3 finishes on synthetic surfaces; the worktab and new rider are pluses but must show a lot more to wakeup and upset.
Bench Beauty
Has been screaming out for more distance in 2 DMR losses and gets the added yaradge today; her best Beyer and lone win on turf December, 2011, gate-to-wire in a HOL-MSW Mile triumph; win-rider Garcia has Chestnut Moon for this.
Leona Pegasus
Lone win at much shorter on dirt sitting just off the speed; was a non factor in last when chasing Totally Blonde; her best stretch punches have been in sprints; need more convincing she wants to go this far; the 2-back runner-up finisher Beyered 60 in a next-out DMR-14K-claiming win.
Totally Blonde
Horse for the course a 2012 DMR graduate at 6.5F; with 1st-time blinkers she opened up a big lead in last then held on well behind a runaway winner; working well for this and do not see a ton of other gate speed here so likely ends up playing catch me if you can again.

Race 4

Test Ride
This grey's sire won multiple G1s and 669K (progeny of Zensational have won 2 of 10 initial starts); the dam scored in 3 of 5 appearances earning 97K; among the winning siblings is 88K earner Annawon.
Can the Man
Some upbeat workouts on view for this beginner; his sire won a G1 and 597K in total; descendants of Into Mischief are 5 for 41 first time out; the mom won 3 of 12 and 227K; winning siblings include 151K earner Supreme Ruler.
Flying Open
Offspring of Early Flyer, a G2 winner who banked 371K, have won their first race at the fine rate of 20 percent; the dam involved never competed; among the winning siblings is 18K earner Andrew's Alliance.
Fuzzy Logic
Caught wide in his first effort, he draws better today and recent workout activity is above average; see Can the Man, above, for same sire info; the dam never raced; winning siblings include 83K earner Hand I Was Dealt.
Candy Boy
The colt's sire was undefeated, a multiple G1 victor who captured 749K; progeny of Candy Ride have won 44 of 347 debuts; the dam won 2 of 13 and 243K; among the winning siblings is 19K earner Sharp Act.
Sired by multiple G2 winner E Dubai who captured 920K and whose offspring have won 9 percent of their first ventures; the dam won 2 of 9 and 35K; winning siblings include 35K bankroller Southern Sunrise.
The sire involved won multiple graded stakes and 1.22 million; descendants of Roman Ruler have won 27 out of 229 initial races; the dam went zero for 3; among the winning sibs is 108K earner Serendipper.
Yes Yes Yes
Recent a.m. drills are sharp; his sire won multiple G1s and 818K (progeny of City Zip have won 79 out of 495 debuts); the dam won 4 of 14 and 179K; this is her only foal to make it to the starting gate.

Race 5

Holladay Road
Stakes winning veteran has a big pedigree for turf and he's shown the ability to dial up a pretty sharp performance on his best day; going to look for him to be ready to give a good account of himself while making his second start back from a layoff.
Camp Victory
He's a G1 winner over the synthetic surface at BHP and like to see that he's run some nice races over turf at today's distance; Talamo knows him well, and with his fine positional speed, he should be able to take full advantage of the inside post.
Circle the Moon
He finished behind today's rival Kid Edward in his latest start and it looks like Maldonado has opted to pilot another in here; winner from latest returned to win next out here on 7/21 going 1 1/16m over turf in a 150k stakes with a 91 Beyer and 3rd finisher won next out here on 7/17 going 1 1/16m over turf vs. 62k OPC's with an 88 Beyer.
Big Bane Theory
He really hasn't run a bad race through his first six starts and it looks like he's been training well for his first start since late January; feel that his best races might still be in front of him and like to see Leparoux aboard.
Kid Edward (IRE)
He has a good deal of natural talent to work with and this 6-year-old has looked pretty good in his two most recent races after needing to take a lot of time off; multiple graded stakes placed performer has every bit the look of a contender in this spot.
Bio Pro
You have to go back many starts to find the last time this nicely-bred 5-year-old failed to show up and give an honest account of himself, and like to see that he earned a career best Beyer Speed Figure in his latest outing; that said, this does appear to be a tough assignment for him.
Starspangled Heat
Multiple stakes placed veteran ran well in his first start after a layoff in his latest outing and he might be ready to step up with one of his sharper performances with that race behind him; it doesn't hurt to see that he's done some nice work over this turf course from four starts.
Rock Me Baby
He might be at his best racing over a synthetic surface, but still have to respect what he's done with his five turf starts and like to see Maldonado stick with him; he doesn't have a bad race on his card in the next time he finishes worse than third will be the first.
Lil Bit O'Fun
He's run some nice races over turf in his career, but his recent form hasn't been quite his best, and this might prove to be a tough spot for him to be seeking his first victory since 2011.
Gab Power
He's yet another in here who deserve some credit for his consistent approach to the game, but he is light on recent winning form, and he finds himself in against a very tough bunch of 62k OPC's; prefer to look toward others.

Race 6

Hoosier Dada
Improved in the latest drill at five-eighths; his sire won a couple of G2 stakes and 1.04 million (offspring of Badge of Silver have won 22 out of 171 debuts); the dam won 1 of 8 races and 19K; among the winning siblings is 80K earner Tower of London.
Oh Brother Go
Hurt by the outside post in his first run last month; his sire won multiple G1s and 1.61 million; the dam won 2 of 22 and 88K; among the winning siblings is 165K earner First Lady Glenna; can upgrade from this comfortable slot.
Little Shack
Adds blinkers after that even debut effort; his sire won a G3 and 613K while the dam won 1 of 3 and 10K; among the winning siblings is 200K earner Mylilsecret; showed more zip in the latest a.m. drill.
New Year's Day
Note that excellent workout of 10 days ago; his sire won multiple G1s and 5.15 million (descendants of Street Cry have won 25 out of 305 initial starts); the dam won multiple G2s and 449K; this is her only foal to compete
My Secret Affair
Superior work tab this month for this colt whose sire won a G2 and 725K; offspring of Broken Vow have won 10 percent of their first races; the dam won 4 of 22 and 280K; among the winning siblings is 42K earner Thunder Calls.
Part of a 4-way pace battle first time out, he steadied out of contention; his sire won a G1 and 450K; the dam won 1 of 7 attempts and 85K; among the winning siblings is 110K bankroller Master Achievement.
Gravity Force
Steady work tab for this new face, son of the prolific Malibu Moon who won 1 of 2 and 33K (his descendants are 97 for 688 as far as winning their first effort); the dam won 4 of 9 and 27K; there are no winning siblings to highlight.
Silver Torch
Progeny of Badge of Silver, a multiple G2 victor who netted 1.04 million, have scored in 22 out of 171 debuts; the mom won 5 of 22 and 69K; among the winning siblings is 471K earner Political Attack.
Hi Fashioned
Solid first effort when slugging it out all the way before settling for second; his sire won a G2 and 583K while the dam was unraced; among the winning siblings is 47K earner Aroyalsweet; draws widest again yet still deserves respect.

Race 7

Innocent Man
Steps up for his first local try after being given time off the Hollywood fade a few months back; gelding has worked pretty well here for his return and the inside draw means that he'll be rolling early, but don't know that he'll have enough left in the lane to step with the late comers; part of the pace.
Switches surfaces after coming up empty in the lane in his return to the turf at Hollywood; sophomore showed some fight in breaking his maiden on the main track there off the break 2 starts back and he worked well there last week for this; barn has done well from limited starters here, but this guy has shown he wants the top for his best and that's not going to be an easy spot to secure in here; siding with others.
Justa Runner
Earned a big number in breaking his maiden in career start number 2 after just missing at 1-2 first out; Baffert sophomore tries winners in his local debut, but he gets off the fence for this and maybe that enables him to relax a bit early off the plethora of lick in this heat; first foal to race out of a SW dam looms a dangerous repeat threat.
Know More
Adds the hood for the turn back and surface switch after finishing off the board over the local sod; sophomore was pretty good in stakes company here last summer so maybe the return to this footing helps, but he hasn't progressed since leaving here and looks to have his work cut out for him against this bunch.
Master Cip
New York bred makes his local debut for this new barn with the hood removed and he has certainly been working well for his initial synthetic spin; there's a good amount of lick in here and though his lone score came on the front end he's proven he can fire from a tracking spot; one to consider.
Real Conundrum
Failed to factor behind some of these while going a little further in his local debut; his prior efforts since moving in with open company earned competitive numbers and maybe the shorter trip helps enhance his late kick in a field with plenty of lick.
Worked a sharp half mile since running a good third behind one of these in his first local spin; barn hasn't had much of an impact here and this guy's wants to be up top early, but they do reach out for Bejarano and maybe the slightly shorter trip benefits this lightly raced sophomore.
Red Creme
Seven time winner ships down here to try the local main track for the initial time off the freshening; don't know how he's going to take to this new footing, but he's been working regularly up North for his return and his positional speed should have him in a great spot just off the front runners; can't overlook.
Cast a Doubt
Didn't factor on the lawn in his first off this outfit's claim a couple of weeks back and now he'll move back to the main track; 4 year old did run well here last summer and his maiden score 2 back showed that he can fire from off the pace which would be to his benefit in this spot; interim half mile drill says he may have a move forward in him.
Midnight Officer
Didn't threaten from an outside draw while making his first start back from better than 2 1/2 months on the shelf in that local debut run; colt may be tighter with the effort behind him, but he was beaten by some of these last time and there's not a lot to suggest he'll be able to make up the ground he'll need to in order to factor today.
Germany Bay
Earned a big number in the near miss at the local level while making just his second start back from a year on the shelf; gelding should benefit from the move off the fence to an outside slot and there is plenty of speed drawn inside of him today; looks as if they'll have him to beat.
Outside drawn 7 year old was close in a G1 stake when last sighted here a couple of summers back; he's had his issues since and hasn't run nearly as fast this year; return to synthetic footing against claimers here last out wasn't much and now he'll tackle allowance runners; looking at others on the win end.

Race 8

Wishing Gate
She enters this race fresh off of a G2 score and like to see the way that she stepped it up along the Beyer Speed Figure scale in that sharp winning performance; it looks like she's trained well since her latest race and don't feel that a G1 victory is out of her grasp.
Discreet Marq
She might have a tough time avoiding an early pace dispute in this spot, but have to respect the fact that her connections see fit to ship this NY-bred across country to take a shot with her in a G1; neverthless, prefer to give the nod to others.
She'll probably need to see a very slow early pace develop to have her best chance at getting the job done, and that just seems very unlikely to happen, not that she's a need-the-lead type, but a slow early pace might be needed for her to have a chance at being involved in the running late.
Emotional Kitten
She showed up with a fine performance when finishing right behind Emollient in the G1 American Oaks in her latest start, and she figures to like the early pace scenario of this race better than what she had to deal with last time; one of two late running threats signed on in here for the Ramsey's.
Charlie Em (GB)
She secured a G3 win in her first start in America three starts ago, but she's going to need to be ready to deliver her sharpest performance to date against this tough bunch if she's to contend; note that she's been beaten by a few of these in her last two starts.
Kitten's Dumplings
She's been very sharp since winning the Edgewood at Churchill Downs three races ago, and after earning a G3 and G2 victory in her two most recent races, she'll now go after a G1 score; the probability of a fast and contested early pace bodes well for her late running style.
Multiple stakes winner finds herself in a tough spot to make her first start routing over turf but this is a talented filly who has shown the ability to adapt to any early pace scenario; Bejarano has won with 40 of 91 (44%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Need You Now (IRE)
Respect the effort she put together to earn a stakes win in her latest outing, but she's obviously faced with a much tougher assignment this time around, and if she wants to get involved in the early running in this spot, she might have a tough time keeping something in reserve for the run through the lane.
Pearlside (FR)
She's multiple group stakes placed racing overseas and she gave a pretty solid account of herself in the G1 French Oaks just two races back; she's an interesting option to consider in her first start in America and her connections must think well of her to sign her up for this.
Unusual Way
Multiple stakes winner is two-for-two in the quality start department since been placed over turf two races ago, but she was beaten by today's rival Wishing Gate in her latest outing, and she's an early speed type in a race that figures to have a fast and contested early pace; Baze has won with 15 of 39 (38%) mounts for this barn in 2013.
Ighraa (IRE)
She needs to see a scratch from the main body of the race in order to draw in, but it certainly looks like she's displayed some decent form racing overseas this year, even if she has been beaten by today's rival Pearlside in a couple of her recent starts.

Race 9

Say's Who
Bet hard in both defeats switching riders to Gomez 33% winners for the trainer since 2012; the show runner from her debut posted a 72 Beyer speed figure in her next-out DMR-MSW win; running-style suggests she may need longer than 5.5F to see very-best form.
Wired for Fun
Could have used today's extra half furlong in last as she was flying late after breaking poorly again; ran well with a new Beyer Top despite showing up with front wraps on for the 1st time; 5%-winning synthetic surface trainer since 2012 does not add to the appeal.
In Dad's Honor
Sire is 14-for-91 with 2-year-old debut starters; is out of an 11-for-45 dam (170K) who's only other foal to race is 4-for-11 Hula Hoop Girl (13K); has been worling like a runner but her trainer is just 1-for the last-25 with 1st-time starters so have mixed feelings.
Feature Attraction
No gate speed at all when racing at today's distance but produced an improved morning workout for this; new rider is 0-for-13 since 2012 for the trainer; is another in the field who''s racing style suggests that more distance will be needed to see best form.
21%-winning debut trainer with a steady worktab for this; her sire is 3-for-28 with 2-year-old debut starters; is out of a 9-0-2-1 dam (28K) who's only other foal to race is 4-0-0-1 Mentalize (3K).
Lethal Story
Mild worktab for start 2 for a 1-for-25 trainer with this angle; ran to the 20-1 debut odds and is another who appears to want longer distances down the road; 1st-time PVal who began Del Mar on an 0-for-13.
Doctor Glynis
Sire is 31-for-193 with 2-year-old debut starters; is out of a 4-for-21 dam (98K) who's only other foal to race is 3-for-12 Herculean (31K); latest-gate workout was her best but will be taking a wait and see approach.
Heaven and Earth
25%-winning 1ster trainer is noted while her August 5 workout was sensational; her sire is 11-for-95 with 2-year-old debut starters; is out of a 1-for-9 dam (36K) who's only other foal to race is 1-for-9 Take a Knee (11K).
My Lucky Rose
Educational unveiling she has every chance to move forward for this; her August DMR workout was right on the money; 26%-winning 2nd start trainer another plus; this one has lots of upside with a clean trip.
Too Obvious
Sire is 0-for-5 with 2-year-old debut starters; is out of a 2-0-0-0 dam who produced 2 winners from 3 other foals to race including 1-for-6 Blushing Cat (47K); latest 6F drill was her best for a 21%-winning 1ster barn since 2012.

Race 10

Corlett Drive
Miss has been pretty consistent vs. winners; note she hopped in the air two back and was hung wide in last; runner has much more speed than he just flashed and nothing wrong with the best of 18 local spin last Tuesday; fresh and dangerous.
Star Vesta
Nice bit of training to have this gal freak off the extended layoff; love the two sizzling drills since the successful return and also like the fact the runners in the company line in last were both clear; repeat well within the realm.
Atlantic Swing
Any horse that can beat 18 foes to break maiden has ability; connections thought enough of her to try the Vanity last year and she was keen to run in the return on the 26th; who was she facing in England?; the winner 11/4/11 beat 7 in a Group 3 since; there are some with designs on the lead here; not sure the race sets up all that great for him.
Warren's Veneda
In tough in the return at the demanding distance and she broke poorly in the process; hung wide from marooned slot in the GG effort, solid drill 8 days ago but she will need help up front; show horse in last win cashed twice since, the last against state-bred N1X foes with an 81 Beyer; exits the best race, must be given long look off that fact alone.
Twelve Folds
Miss has speed but she has proven she can sit just off the pace and perform; love the spacing of the return drills including the best of 51 sizzler last Monday; would expect her to be on the muscle fresh today; due to punch it on in at this level.
Showgirl Form
Fact she ran well in defeat in her racing debut gives her a chance to fire fresh as she makes her synthetic debut; she does seem to have taken to this surface; this gal is kin to an over $100K and she hails from a stable that has spotted them great all year.
Controlled Chaos
She got legit splits to close into in last and was making up ground; if you figure she just needed the race, you can build a case for a move forward; the 5/10 winner beat $20K claimers next out with a 72 Beyer; surprise package.
Steadied in the return two back, now she has a feel of the strip; hung wide when beaten on the square in last, there seems to be plenty of speed in here to help the cause; can't fault those that give her another shot at glory.
Pebble Beach Baby
Toss last, she was out of bounds on the wrong surface; miss has much more speed than she just flashed and would expect rider to be aggressive here; in good hands, she has a right to mature with grace as kin to Grade 2 placed near $300K earner Yacht Spotter; may rebound here.
Proven locally and it also came in a stretch out situation; nice; miss caught legit splits in last and just could not keep up; could set her getting a nice stalk and pounce trip today and the blood is there as she is kin to over $220K earner Shift in Power; surprise package.
She at least was inching toward the winner in last; one concern is the goose egg slate on the synthetic; you could have had her for $8K early in the year, may need easier to shine.
