Closer Looks: Del Mar August 14, 2013

DRF Plus Preview

Race 1

Billy Win
Both wins on the lead and when he didn't make the lead in last he faded behind Manewal and Luz Atticus who both follow him here; sheds 2 pounds for this which adds to the appeal but if he doesn't make the front-end loose on the lead it does not seem likely he will turn the tables.
Bubba Fizz
Landed behind these 2-back noting his DMR-2012 synthetic-surface graduation; today is rider 9 in as many races which is not a good win angle; hot-DMR barn goes to a 40%-win rider for the trainer since '12; saves ground mid-pack then makes 1 run; seems way off his best game at the moment.
54 days away for the 1st-synthetic surface start and the DMR workout for this was not enticing; finished last with a troubled gate break in a key race last out; the winner and show finishers from last posted 94-81 Beyer speed figures taking next-out RUI-50K and PRM-optional claimer events.
Jets to Brazil
Has not fired back to his debut-winning Beyer on turf; was outrun in his 1st synthetic-surface start and his DMR workout for this was not very appealing; drops to lowest-claiming price ever for the 2nd straight start seeking answers; sheds weight in with his lightest-assignment ever.
Sun Catcher
Been a new runner since the barn change; saved best Beyer speed figure for his 1st start on a synthetic surface; the 3-back show runner Beyered 70 in his next-out SR-25K-maiden claiming win then repeated in an SR-starter alw.; outfinished in last at longer noting he won when loose on the lead around 2 turns but does not figure to own the best gate speed here with Zippingaroundtown in.
Try to catch me with 7 straight races 1st at the 1st call; 2 races with winners were dull efforts; idle 59 days for this; the 2-back winner repeated in a PEN-10K claimer with a 77 Beyer; defeated the 3-back show runner who posted a 63 speed figure in his next-out SA-30K-maiden claiming winner; know him early but unsure about late.
25%-winning 1st-off-the-claim trainer makes him an automatic contender for win honors; defeated many of these in last when favored improving sharply in his DMR return race graduating here; is eligible to move forward making his 2nd start off a 58-day layoff.
Hoosier Diddy
Defeated by more than 30 lengths in his only other race with blinkers; faced the winner 3-back who repeated with a 92 Beyer capturing a DMR optional claimer then made it 3 in a row with a 93 scoring in a DMR alw.; cwas laimed off the Mile maiden win while getting up at today's 6F distance is the major concern.
Tommy's Tune
Won his career debut on a synthetic surface and was purchased for this?; was claimed off the favored win posting a career-best Beyer; new barn wins 27% first-off-the-purchase so a pretty good chance he can at least repeat that career-Top speed figure from last.
Exits his lowest Beyer since January; 6%-winning fresh trainer off the key-race stakes loss; races in a claimer for the 1st time since March a SUN loss; the winner from last Beyered 70 in a next-out ARP-40K stakes; beat the 7th and 9th-place finishers from last who Beyered 70-59 in next-out ARP-40K stakes and alw. wins.
Luz Atticus
0-for-11 trainer with 1st blinkers since 2012 does not add to the appeal; won his career debut over the track but posted his best Beyer at BHP; knocking on the door for a win with a couple of good efforts; widest drawn so will lose ground but figures to move forward here 2nd time off the 71-day layoff; have mixed feelings.

Race 2

Vegas Rules
Tribal Rule has been a positive influence as a turf sire and that alone is a reason to give this filly another chance to see what she can do over turf; like the early speed that she brings with her and the runner up from her latest race returned to win next out at BHP on 7/14 going 6 1/2f vs. 25k OPC's with an 80 Beyer.
J Louie
Sire wins with approximately 19% of his turf starters and stakes placed dam won 2 of 13 starts for 156k, including 0-for-3 over turf; this miss is a 1/2 to Richelle's Joy (1-6, 48k over turf); she has the type of early speed that can be useful in a turf dash like this.
Ziva the Diva
Full sister to Irene's Jackpot (2-12, 48k over turf) ran well in her one start over turf and that was after a long layoff; not going to be at all surprised if she's ready to improve over her turf debut in this spot.
Backwoods Belle
Another representative of strong turf sire Tribal Rule signed on in here, and like Vegas Rules, this filly deserves another chance to see which she can do racing over turf; runner-up from latest returned to win next out at BHP on 6/29 going 5 1/2f vs. 8k claimers with a 65 Beyer.
Atta Girl Alma
The 78 Beyer Speed Figure she earned for her latest performance represents the top last out figure in this field and like to see that she earned that figure after a layoff and over this turf course; she certainly has a live look to her in this spot with Bejarano jumping aboard again.
Puff Pastry
She has a chance to get herself into the mix against these if she can find her way back to one of her better performances but not wild about what she's shown us in her first two attempts against winners, and she's been beaten by a couple of today's rivals in those races.
Tangerine Tickle
Yet another daughter of strong turf influence Tribal Rule lined up in this spot and really have to respect the way that she performed in her latest start when being returned from an extremely long layoff; winner from latest returned to win next out here on 8/10 going 6 1/2f vs. 40k OPC's with an 86 Beyer.
This mare has a fine pedigree for turf and she's shown us that she's capable of proving to be a tough out on the front end on her best day; she merits contender status in this spot and she finished right behind one of today's key rivals in Atta Girl Anna in her most recent outing.
Stakes placed mare needs to see a scratch from the main body of this race in order to draw in but like the idea of her turning back to a sprint distance while making her first start after a claim for a barn that scores well in that category; viewing the presence of Smith as a positive indicator.
Our Heat
She's done some nice work over turf from 11 starts while recording four victories, but she might prefer more distance to work with than today's five-furlong assignment offers; prefer to give the nod to others in this one.

Race 3

Rags for Ben
The mare's comeback race involved an extra wide trip; has flashed only brief speed in prior attempts at this oval and the rail advantage today seems immaterial; latest workout is a plus but hardly enough to turn things around dramatically.
Marina Del Heat
Aimed way too high in her local debut and although racing for the lowest price tag of her career today, she cannot be seriously endorsed; probably is in need of at least one more tightening race.
Warren's Pepper
Compromised by the outermost post and slow start in her maiden voyage last month; her sire was zero for 4 while the dam involved won 1 of 6 and 3K; among the winning siblings is 97K earner Warren's Dr. Yang.
Lethal Miss
Nothing to highlight on the turf but this surface switch can do wonders; her sire won a G2 and 487K overall; the dam won her only race and 9K; among the winning siblings is 469K bankroller A Jealous Woman.
Beaten favorite showed vast improvement with equipment change and drop to this level; her sire won multiple G1s and 1.91 million; the dam won her only test; winning siblings include 17K earner Vicola.
Newcomer was sired by G1 victor Honor and Glory who netted 1.2 million and whose offspring have won 83 out of 722 initial starts; the dam went zero for 5; among the winning siblings is 80K earner El Adelantado.
Star of the Night
Yet to earn an exacta finish, but she turned in a fair showing 3 starts ago under apprentice handling; may rally in time for a share here if the pace is intensified; generous odds are assured once again.
Secret Memo
Showed much more prompting speed in the latest venture, a sign of good things on the horizon; lands into a fairly paceless field today and is recommended for exotic wagering inclusion as a result of that; note troubled post position history.
Visions of Candy
After a fine first run in April, she did not recover from a slow break second time out; her sire was undefeated, a multiple G1 winner who notched 749K; the dam won 4 of 12 and 114K; winning sibs include 150K earner Yankee History.
Scary Fast
Despite the long layoff, she went to post at even money last month and just missed; her sire won several G1s and 3.26 million; the dam never competed; winning siblings include 620K earner Green Team; obvious true contender but at a short price.
Lakota Road
Beginner hails from Breeders' Cup Mile winner War Chant who amassed 1.13 million and whose progeny have won 10 percent of their debuts; the dam won 3 of 12 and 202K; sib to 49K earner Tiz the Route whose 2 victories were in dirt sprints.

Race 4

Pawn Shop
Is aggressively spotted first off the claim by his new connections, and although unraced on Del Mar's Polytrack, would appear the type to like it; she handles anything, from dirt to turf to Tapeta; perhaps at a disadvantage shipping all the way down from NoCal; short on speed, but should get a lively pace to aid her rally; consider.
Gotta Skedaddle
The bulk of her success has come at Turf Paradise, where the company is much easier than in SoCal; three starts on the West Coast have resulted in all rear-half finishes; should expect speed on the stretch out but another fade in the lane; no thanks.
Lindz Winz
Showed speed and weakened badly in her first race of the meet, proving unable to keep up with Cal-bred allowance/optional claimers; 10K suits her better; she actually ran a close third for double this price two back, though at LS and on turf, which she seems to like a bit better than dirt; 3-0-0-0 on synthetic tracks; threat.
Last couple starts have left much to be desired; and even her efforts Mar. 31 and May 10 - when she was on the board - resulted in Beyers in the low 50s; that simply won't cut it; likely better than what she showed last out when returning from a layoff, however.
Romantic Wish (GB)
Was able to win for 25K earlier in the year, but has been off the board in four starts since, with only one competitive effort among those four; gets dropped to 10K off the last-place finish in her first start for her current connections; she did handle the Poly here last year and also did well on the all weather overseas.
Bonita Star (GB)
Hasn't won this year but her two efforts on synthetic tracks this summer have been very good, including in her one start over this track July 20; two back she was even third in a race in which the top two returned to win; no speed but otherwise appealing; edge.
Memo to Kathy
Two awful performances this meet and no reason to expect a form reversal; she just doesn't seem to like this track, having gone 4-0-0-0 here with a top Beyer of 45; look elsewhere.
Has just a maiden win to her credit, and though dropping in claiming price, is taking on a lot more seasoned runners in this spot; lone win came on the lead but there are some stretch out sprinters in this race; does at least have 4 figs among her 6 synthetic starts that resulted in 58+ Beyers; so she is one of the faster runners in the field on figures.
Katy's Kitty
That third Aug. 1 was her best effort in quite some time, and perhaps a signal she is return to form; interesting that Knapp re-claimed her in June; he won a couple races with her with in late 2012; reunited with Maldonado, who was aboard for those late 2012 wins; can race on the lead or from just off the pace; some appeal.
Negra Tomasa
Can't recommend off a number of poor efforts since a third at Hollywood in May; weak figures, which aren't surprisingly given her struggles of late; no Beyers above a 46 since Fpx last year; will wait until she gets to the fair before considering.

Race 5

Cravin' the Heat
Never thrilled with runners in this league after repeated beats for a tag; back to the original pilot this time; a couple of full siblings banked 6 figures and top sibling earned over $260K; one race jumps off the pace and that when she went :44 flat down the hill; look for rider to be aggressive here and try to steal it.
Patriot C H
Signs of life last time but she has to prove she can handle the synthetic; show horse in the debut graduated next out at this level with a 65 Beyer last Wednesday and the winner repeated in a state-bred $25K optional here 8/4 with an 80 Beyer; Quinn is Gaines assistant and the stable is under his care through suspension; dam's lone win was a route; all 3 siblings won including Grade 3 winner, 8 for 20 racer and over $600K earner Lucky J. H; she's figuring it out.
Hot and Pleasing
Grinder has the three races to draw from now and the place horse 7/4 graduated at this level with a 70 Beyer; connections would love to see her start acting like top kin, 4-time SW and millionaire Excessivepleasure; off arguably her best race; can't dismiss.
Tiz a Kiss
Considering the winner was clear, the last race was not all that bad; sire was a proven router; stakes winning 5 for 13 dam earned over $250K, was turf only; lone half bro to race Candy's Sunrise took 2 of 9, banked $80K; pretty snappy move last Friday; can't be counted out.
Seeking Bliss
Unraced Sought After 7 for 47 with debuters; 1 for 27 cashed routing; this is her first to roll; the drills are steady but would have liked to have seen a local spin; lean toward watching a race.
Coconut Cream Pie
Miss has fired every time, just has to find a way to close the deal; both sibs did win multiple times in the minor leagues; beaten chalk in half of her 6 outs, should sit a nice stalk and pounce trip; due to hit paydirt.
She got a feel of the route game and that could have helped the stamina; miss was nearly 3 clear in last; 6/15 place horse graduated at this level next out with a 74 Beyer; winner 6/15 beat state-bred N1X foes and then made it three for 3 beating $40K optional rivals here last Saturday with and 86 figure; slightly shorter trip could be just what the good doctor ordered.
Dow Diva
Expect more speed as blinks re-added; if you figure she was just dead short in last you can build a case for a move forward; she doesn't have to be 8th early on; expect a rebound run.
Sidepocket Run
Youngster has a nice turn of late foot but things will have to unfold just right up front; there does seem to be enough speed here to help the cause; look for rider to take a hold, try to save ground and then run them all down.

Race 6

In a Wine Tizzy
It took a bit of time but he finally put it all together and looked good whipping maidens here Aug. 1 in start No. 12; that being said, it's a big, big step up today as it's first time vs. winners and that win came sprinting whereas he's routing today; and, while he looked good winning it's not like the Beyer came back all that hot (68); that being said, at least he may be getting things figured out, he likes it here and has worked well since.
Far from disgraced for $40K on turf here July 20 aqnd the horse he chased (Magic Channel) came back to win nicely here Sunday; moves to the main track on which he's worked well, and note a good run on GG's synthetic track last fall; so, the surface switch and drop can both help, though he's dealing with elders today.
Somewhere With You
Looks headed the right way; things were a bit dicey to start his career but then came an OK 3rd at BHP July 6 and then a game maiden win here July 20; that shows he likes this place and that sentiment is buoyed by a bullet work Aug. 10 (3fs in:35.20); that being said, it's first time vs. winners and that maiden win came sprinting - we're routing today - so there are hurdles to be sure.
Seemed well spotted for first 2 tries vs. winners June 7 and July 20 but was no factor either time; maybe starter allowance company is too much for him; well, if that's the case today's drop can help and Talamo, who was up for his big maiden sprint win at BHP May 4 gets back aboard; there's also a nice :59.80 work here Aug. 7; even so, is this where he really fits vs. winners, hmmmm?
Cosmic Heat
Pulled up and vanned off at SA Jan 21 and you had to be worried when he wasn't seen for another 5 1/2 months; well, there are no more worries - he came back to romp over maidens at BHP July 6, stepped up and won nicely here July 21; Ellis saw fit to claim him, too, and has superb off-the-claim numbers (4 for last 10, 40%); must deal with tougher but he certainly appears on top of his game, though those 2 winning Beyers (62, 59) also tell you he'll need another step forward to beat these, which is hardly out of reach.
Last was ugly, yes, but he blew the start, was very wide, it was his first start in 2 months and he was facing much tougher ($40K); love that Bejarano takes the call as Sadler drops him a couple notches and this guy is certainly capable of doing better; ran awfully well here a year ago and while h might not be that horse any longer the drop may be key and 2 smashing recent works say he's feeling pretty spry.
Unusual Lover
Game maiden win on turf at GG June 8; came south to face winners at BHP July 11 but was no factor; hey, you can be a bit forgiving about that as it was first time vs. winners, he had to ship, and he was facing some toughies; down in class today, which may help, but he's a big question mark regarding the surface switch though the Unusual Heats tend to run on anything.
Unbridled Giant
On paper the one to beat with proven form vs. tougher; trouble is, they don't give away anything out here and despite 2 very nice outings vs. tougher winners on the BHP sod this spring Baffert now drops him in for a tag and is willing to part with him for just $25K; at least worked steadily since and if the drop is a sign he's not the horse he was just a couple months ago he likely doesn't have to be in order to beat these - but geez, the drop is surely scary and to embrace him means you'll also be taking a short price.
A couple decent outings vs. starter allowance foes after finding stakes foes too tough at GG 2 months ago; also have to like that bullet :48.40 move at BHP Aug. 8 as it says he's feeling good; that being said, his best work has come sprinting and today we're routing, and he got no help from the draw either.

Race 7

Sirocco Strike
Multiple stakes placed gelding ran well in his latest outing over this turf course when splitting a couple of today's rivals and he's capable of an even sharper performance than that on his best day; however, he might need some racing luck after breaking from a tricky rail post.
He finished right behind a couple of today's rivals in his latest outing and he's eligible to be ready for a better performance while making his second start back from a layoff; not going to count him out of it while showing up for sharp connections.
He exits the same race as a number of today's rivals and he ran well in that event while falling farther out of it through the opening stages that he would have liked; he's in with a legitimate chance, especially if he can get more involved in the running early on.
Distinctiv Passion
Have to respect what this stakes winning colt has done with his first seven starts and he's won four of his last five; he was a sharp gate-to-finish winner in his turf debut in his latest outing and Maldonado seems to know all the right buttons to push.
Strong Wind
He earned a career best Beyer Speed Figure in his turf debut in his latest outing while making only his second start for this barn; nevertheless, he will have to be ready for better if he's to beat this tough bunch.
She Digs Me
He has a G3 win to his credit but to this point in his career he's been at his best racing over dirt and his two turf starts haven't been anywhere near strong enough to suggest that he can run with these.
Boat Trip
He was on top of his game when last seen and it's tough to argue with anything that he's done with his six turf starts; he's proven that he can run well when fresh and going to look for him to show up and give a good account of himself.
Multiple stakes winner almost always shows up with a sharp performance, and if he feels like bringing his 'A' game to the table, there isn't any reason why he can't prove to be tough to tackle; it's been a while since he's been over turf, but he has run well over grass in the past.
Innocent Man
He needs to see a scratch from the main body of this race in order to draw in, but when seeing how well he ran the first two times he raced over turf, he's worth keeping an eye on; winner from latest returned to win next out at BHP on 6/16 going 6f vs. 40-35k claimers with an 89 Beyer.
Crimson Giant
He has just a single victory after 31 starts and he hasn't posted a win in his last 19 starts going back through 2012; this has to be considered an extremely tough spot for him to be seeking his first turf win.
A Kings Life
He's never run a race that is anywhere near strong enough to suggest that he can keep up with the top contenders in this spot, and in the unlikely event that he does draw in, he'll play the role of an outsider.

Race 8

A bit more keen to run early in what seems like a move forward; the sibling that won took only career start at Turfway in a maiden $7500 claimer with a 86 Beyer last years; must hurry.
Bothered in two of the last 4 efforts and at least she was inching toward the winner in last; a valid factor if they go bonkers early on.
Janes Ship
Some of these Southwest invaders have flashed speed here and she has been fairly close a couple of times on this circuit; lone sibling graduated in a division of the NTRA at HOL in 2011 with a 94 Beyer for only score; she has had her chances.
Toccet about 5% with debuters in a 207-runner sample; sire won 6 times at 2 including 2 G1s, banked over $900K; stakes placed 2 for 10 dam earned nearly $60K; all 3 siblings won including Swilly Ferry, who earned $375K in England by virtue of winning twice on grass in her 3 wins; will not have to be the second coming of Ruffian to make an impact here.
John's War
New game going short but she could be left with a ton of work to do late; a couple of decent drills since last race; has some things to iron out.
Magic Tiz
Double digits at the windows every time, is looking at a similar fate; looking elsewhere for a key top horse.
Irish Winnie
Hung wide from marooned slot, the drop seems logical; SW 7 for 24 dam banked over $270K; this is her first to race; miss did flash some semblance of speed and may show more on the dip; don't ignore.
Dolphin Shorts
In tight early when cold on the board for a Mitchell runner; dam was 0 for 5; all 4 siblings won including a debut winner; top earner banked just over $30K; got a feeling we have not seen the best of this one.
Taffeta Disaster
Three regressions since the day she was claimed; connections hoping she starts acting like full bro and near $350K earner Medzendeekron; shades back on, look for bug to try to put her into the race early.
Party Bus
Wide the first time for a tag, she has the two races to draw from as Gomez takes reins; backers can point to the fact there is an over $150K earner in the family; rates long look in all the slots.
Rockin' Hard Gals
Off a career effort, bug got a chance to figure her out and she got a boost when the 5/27 winner repeated in a $16K N2L seller with a 58 Beyer; she should have her sea legs under her by now; rates valid look.
Charger Girl
Lack of speed makes her vulnerable; 2 for 6 dam banked 10 grand an appearance; 5 of 6 siblings won; top kin took 6 of 41, earned just under a grand a start; can't build a winning case for her today.

Race 9

Race 10
