A CLOSER LOOK at Woodbine races on 10/03
Is back in his proper classification and without blinkers after being forced to run higher off the claim; he might like the easier company but will need to come back to his best to be competitive; that is questionable but not impossible.
Has moved to a new barn of late and his first for a higher tag in this same condition was dull; he comes back in a hurry and also might appreciate the easier company today; again his best would be relevant but without a sharp reversal of form he won't get much.
Last race was improved and one of his best and should he be able to repeat that he would be within range depending upon how some of the others do; he probably needs a little more room according to his finishes and that could be the negative for him today.
Get Up Trip
Sophomore comes in off his first win and best race last time and he will in all likelihood have to cope with a faster pace and a faster race if he is to have a say; leaning to others.
Cheryls Wild Child
Has two good races on hid resume and is in the logical spot after the FE win; he has to deal with a new track, better runners and a faster pace; he will probably also have to run faster to win; can see him improving if he handles the surface; interesting at 6-1 or higher.
Has not run as well last year though there were signs of life in his latest race; while it is an open race and questionable how some will run today, he will need better if he is to be around at the finish.
Sophomore filly sprint looks to be wide open and should feature an honest pace; if she is back on track she can be competitive and the inside was okay if not best last week; been moving barns of late and whether or not she can reverse her direction after a 5F work and in her third start of this cycle is questionable with her history featuring many one-race cycles.
Moves barns after the claim and rider switch is made as well meaning more weight is aboard; she showed her speed over a dull surface and she will be under pressure from at least one other in the early going; she is a three-time winner this year and if she runs well under pressure as she has done before she will be a contender.
Has been close in half her starts though winless this year; she is still a winner of only one and is back in with open company for her lowest tag where she has been competitive before; the pace could come up fast and contested and she could have an ideal trip but she will need her best race of the cycle to have any chance at the win.
Has one career win back in her first start of the year; she does take a big class drop to a new low and it might pay to look at the first quarter more than the finish position of her latest after she flashed early speed and that could lead to better; she will need a race close to her early season best to be competitive if the race goes as it figures to.
Will be pressed on the lead as she steps up to take on tougher and she has experienced a wake-up call of late for no apparent reason; she has one of the best last races though she is unlikely to get that kind of easy pace trip as she is facing better today; goes for new interests off the claim and while she will these more difficult, she is not out of the mix and might even be the one to collar.
Recent maiden breaker was in against much better last time and was unable to keep pace; the drop should help her but it remains very questionable as to whether she can match her best in this pace match up; she may need her best race to be competitive, and she has shown that she can run from behind as well which could be useful from the outside post; worth a good look if she is reasonable odds.
Has had her share of chances with several tries in this class and she is going to have to do better than she has been following a short break and one interim work almost three weeks ago; have no reason to play her to run that much better today in her first route race and will look to others.
Might be of interest with the drop as she stretches out again and she doe shave a good route race with better earlier in the year; if she can run back to that and with the drop she should be right there; contender.
Has not shown much of anything in her races this year or last making the board only once; have to wonder if she is really enjoying her pursuit of racing; when she signals some interest we will gain some, but not until that time.
Been working well and regularly and will drop to a new low and as she will try the longer distance for the fifth time in her career; she has run well enough off the layoff to think that she will be able to be competitive here if she does fire; she might.
Ran well in her return to the races and here and was battling on the front end throughout; she will have to build on that race and it was one of the better last efforts and it came at the distance; she has a pair of interim 5F works too; that should help; contender.
Has made one start in the past 10 months and she did hot really do much; she tries the longer distance for the first time and will race with blinkers on; she will need to be more competitive and faster and on that basis is very questionable until she gives a greater indication of race readiness.
Will be asked to stretch out to two turns after a decent run in her latest and she has had her problems staying the distance in her earlier tries with better at the distance; she might go better this time but it is still a stretch to think that she will be up to these.
Has a couple of recent starts as the distance in related classes and she has been up with the pace throughout and backed away only a bit in the stretch; she will need to hang tougher in the stretch to beat these but there is little reason for her not to be competitive; she might even move ahead with a good trip; she is very playable though she might be deserving of odds below 3-1.
Have not much reason to think that she will run that much better this time just because she has had some time off and one slow work 10 days ago; another to be waited on for signals of life.
Was big odds for his debut and broke very slowly and raced in a sluggish manner but he did have a bit of late run in the stretch; that race should go a long way for experience purposes but he remains at a high level.
T J's Lucky Moon
Debuted just over 3 months ago as a longshot in a tough maiden event won by subsequent stakes winner Shaws Creek; he shoed a bit of late interest in that event and gets the necessary added distance, plus Lasix, in this return; experience should count for something.
Debuted in Florida and was well bet for that race but he had a bad start; he had a short break before debuting at this track and he was in close pursuit of a contested pace and was getting closer at the finish; he should appreciate the added distance and is a leading contender.
High Wire Glory
Was scheduled to begin his career a few weeks back but he acted up in the paddock and then flipped in the gate, necessitating a scratch; he was trained by Kevin Attard then but is now under the care of Attfield; he's by an above average debut sire from a stakes winning mare who won her debut and 3 of her 4 winning foals won 1st time out; contender but tab his pre-race behaviour.
Bold Executive is above average as a debut sire and this is the 2nd foal of a winning mare; part of the entry had a decent workout over a very slow surface on Sept. 15 but this is a tricky distance at which to make a debut.
One of his owners will be doing just that again this year and this sizy colt is by a top sire who is above average as a debut sire; the stakes winning mare, who was also very large, has had one starter, stakes winner Steady Ruckus, who is better than ever this year at age 5; 'Stanley was on the rail in a workout in company with an older mate last weekend and fared okay.
By a sire who can get a quick runner but he is a bit low with debut winners; the unraced mare has produced a winner but she's 0 for 2 with 2yo winners.
Caught a sloppy track in her debut and that is a tough surface for a first race; in addition, she was repeatedly checked and steadied on the backstretch - traffic trouble or giving her rider a tough time? - but she still picked up a share; she gets the rail this time and Kabel stays with her; consider.
Had a decent debut race when well bet but a faulty start last time - she broke outward - cost her a couple of lengths at the start and she trailed; she drops in class, gets blinkers and can go better with a proper beginning.
Was a longshot in her debut and while that was a slowly run race, there were some good ones in the field; she flashed speed and faded but gets to drop in class with blinkers added.
Had a terrible start last time when she broke way out and then she rushed up quickly to duel for the lead on a speed favoring track but she ran out of gas; she needs a better start and the shorter distance and blinkers will help; contender.
Her sire is well known for siring quick runners and he is average as a debut sire; the mare has produced a winner from 3 starters and that one won her career debut; possibility.
Was behind the field early in her debut race but made up some ground in a good effort; it should be noted that she was a vet scratch on Sept. 20 and she has not had a workout since her opener (at time of writing).
Dipped into a claiming event last time and sprinted to a clear lead but it was a short-lived burst; she drops in class and shortens up under a new rider; could hit the tri.
Took a bit of betting support in her debut but not as much as project considering her pedigree; she was outrun in that race and has had 3 months off; a recent gate prep will help her come out of the gate better and she gets blinkers to improve her focus.
Maggie B B
Her sire is a winning 1/2 brother to top class runner Bessarabian but he has not sired many foals; this is the 1st foal of a mare who won 7 races, all at route distances; watch once.
Trainer sent out a debut winner that was heavily bet recently; this gal is by a sire who is above average with debut winners and this is the first foal of a winning mare; she has a wide post but steady workouts.
Has come to hand since the blinkers have been removed and he will be stepping up both in class and condition since a good race in non-winners of three competition; those races are relevant in terms of pace and speed so as long as he shows up and the inside is okay he is a legitimate contender for the win.
Hunting The Gold
Pace of his latest was somewhat hot and after being back early he did close a lot of ground and was going well on end; he would have a better chance here if he could get away a little better and if he can run back to or better his latest he should be a contender for the win.
Lost In Action
Lightly raced he won his first start with blinkers and Lasix and has faced better when trying the turf and allowance runners; he has been inconsistent in his performances and if he reverses form and runs one of his better races with the drop today he should be fighting for the top spot; you have to decide if you think he will run that way.
Did not run all that poorly considering the change in the pace of his last race and it depends on how well he runs today considering that his better races have come when he was able to contest slower paces and it should be faster today; not impossible but if you are betting based on the past as opposed to anticipating a different performance today you will be looking elsewhere.
Be interesting to see what he can do as he goes turf to dirt and as he goes for a tag for the first time; he has good speed and the turf-to-dirt switch often enhances that; he has a good interim work and should be fresh; could be on the lead and tough to catch; player.
Took him 13 starts to break his maiden and he has a better race and win earlier on but was disqualified from that; hard to say if he can run back to that race but an effort like that would make him very competitive in here; he is not impossible over this kind of a track off his latest.
She has not done a lot of winning of late; she drops off the claim with a single work and while she has run a better race this year she is a questionable proposition even at this level and for this barn; she could win if she runs to her best this year, though that may not be likely.
American In Paris
Drops for her second race off a layoff after dueling on the fast pace last time; should be a major factor if she moves forward at all or runs back to that one; contender.
Has not run well this year and the last time she went turf to dirt she did not do much either; whether or not the return of the blinkers will have sufficient impact on her performance is questionable and will look to others in search of the competitors for the today's top spots.
Older mare has a limited local history but has been in good form over at FE when challenging easier company; she was claimed again last time and while her current form makes her interesting it is uncertain that she will run back her best or be fast enough for these, though she was competitive there for this price in her penultimate race; edge to the locals.
Recent claim drops and goes turf to dirt after experimenting with better; she has speed and has run some good races this season and if she can run another she can be in the hunt; she has an interim work and should run well with the drop and switch; contender.
Has taken three wins this year but has never run a race in the 70's; her latest win here came when she tracked a fast pace and won going away, though she then failed to match that effort last time; she should be in position turning for home but don't know that she can make a race of it to the wire if some of the others run as expected.
Been off a while and had been a fringe player since winning her third race in conditioned company; she is more comfortable with more room and with the works spaced out so far and at the abbreviated distance others are given preference though she might be watched for next time.
Has not run for some time but has been working steadily as she prepares for her first race in over a year as she will go for a new low; she did not win at 4 in a limited campaign and the winner of only two will have to run her best in her first of the year; she did run well fresh in her first last year and that was with better; these kind are risky plays, but she is also not impossible either.
Unusually late post time for a stakes race and this gal, the probable favorite, will be getting her first taste of night racing; she took a little trip to Philly looking to keep her undefeated record intact but she was unable to made an impression in that event; she is reunited with her regular rider and she meets just two other winners; strong factor.
Matter of Law
One of 3 winners in the field and she was 2nd to Jade Eyed in the Nandi in July and note that Parisia was also in the field; that trio are back for another round and this gal switches back to dirt after a failed turf try last month; her trainer has been hot in recent weeks.
Tower of Honour
Has a popular pedigree for these parts and she's one of 2 by the sire in the field; she is a maiden but she raced well on the rail in her latest; minor share.
Was nicely prepared to win her career debut and she took advantage of a speed favouring surface when leading throughout; her mum loved to win races; she's one of 3 by 'Lover in the field including Jade Eyed, a tough foe.
Stakes placed gal ran a really big race in the restricted Muskoka as she made a sudden move into the far turn, wove her way through traffic and scampered to a clear lead; problem was, she moved too soon and she got a bit tired in the late stages; she shortens up and has a big chance to win her maiden in this stakes event,
My Valley Girl
She's bred for speed and she pressed the pace while 3 wide in her debut but she could not keep pace with the leaders; the winner and runner-up both look like nice prospects as both came back to win their next starts.
Was heavily bet in the first 2 starts of her career and had speed in each outing but she disappointed in her 2nd race and has been on vacation; she is one of several maidens in the field but it's not a tough race; for a purse share.
Can You Feel It
Gets the rail with the early scratching of Key to Success and this gelding has been trying hard this year but he hasn't been lucky and is winless; he had a bumping incident with Super Blitz at the beginning of his latest, raced wide in a stalking position and he finished evenly; certainly a top three contender.
Talk It Up
Hey, maybe sprinting is his thing now but let's face it, he had a screaming pace to chase and when the front runners got rubber-legged in the stretch, he blew on past; there's not a lot of speed in this race so it will be interesting to see how he handles that situation.
Vet scratch on Sept. 16 comes off a troubled outing when he had to go very wide on the turn to avoid a hurt rival; he finished well in that race with Can You Feel It just in front of him and he shows a couple of recent works; trhat.
Drops to a new low level after flattening out into the stretch last time on a sloppy track and he probably didn't like the gooey going that day; all 3 of his wins have come at this distance and he is overdue to break through; factor.
Chris's Bad Boy
Was a longshot in his local debut for twice this price and he chased the leaders briefly before fading and he has not been seen since; he drops in class after light recent prepping; wouldn't be surprised if he improved enough to be a threat.
Continues to maintain good form and he might have been closer in his latest but he had a bumping incident with 'Feel It at the start, stalked the duel but then got into traffic trouble on the turn before launching a belated rally; big shot.
Drops in class again and cuts back to a distance he likes but his form has slipped a bit recently; he could not keep up in his latest behind some tough veterans but he had a fast recent workout; longshot play only.
Tried grass when he came up from Florida but didn't do much on that surface so he switches back to dirt; he gets a good class drop too and both factors should lead to an improved effort, perhaps at big odds; not certain that the distance suits him though; mixed signals.
Gordy's Our Man
Classy guy goes for a barn that was ahot last week and this guy had a joslting start last time and only brief speed; he has not had too many bright spots this year and that is a concern.
