A CLOSER LOOK at Hastings Park races on 9/22

2nd Hastings

Disputed Intent

By a sire who won the Queen's Plate and he is a good 2yo sire but not many of his foals win 1st time out; this the 1st foal of the winning mare; her workout times have been average and she gets the rail.

Perfectly Free

Should take a lot of betting support again because she has experience and has run well in all 3 starts; she raced inside and behind a fast pace in her latest but didn't have a lot of stretch punch and that is a concern; her fast recent workout is promising.

Victoria's Garden

Grey gal is by a good sire in these parts but he is below average with debut winners; this is the 3rd foal of the mare and she was a route winner; this miss had a workout at this distance recently and that should have her fit and ready.

Cassidy Queen

Still has shown some greenness in her running style but went a lot better last time as she made a fast mid-race move to get into 3rd place and she held that position to the wire; looks like a major player.

Acting Maudlin

Her sire is not known for his debut winners but the winning mare has produced a couple of winners; like Victoria's Garden, this gal has the breeding for more distance but her workout times have been solid.

Sensitive Woman

Her sire is not known for his debut winners but the dam won her 2yo debut and she has produced 2 winners from 4 foals to race and is 1 for 3 with 2yo winners from starters; has a couple of experienced gals to her inside who should be tough but include her in exotics.

Recently stretched out in distance but has not had much speed or late kick; she drops in claiming price with Solis retaining the mount; taking others.

Heather's Favorite

Form has taken a turn for the better since she move to the fair circuit where she did win, but unless she can reproduce that here, which she has not really done in the past she will have a tough time of it; leaning to others, but she is not impossible either.

Love Jasmin

Did little when she returned from the lengthy absence; with that under her belt she will have to move forward; she drops and has worked as she returns; give her at least one more start.

Rip N Zip

Each start in her short career has come with time in between and so far she has not shown enough in any of her races to make her of interest; she has failed to be close at the end; could be starting to mature but still has a long way to go; let her show something first.

Bally Cat

Won her debut at Kam and her latest was her best since then when she returned from some time away; if the pattern holds she will go down from there or she will start to run better with her first start at this venue; she is a good fit if she can change the pattern.

Two Cookies

Had a good return race always within striking range and that makes her one of the more likely competitors in this one; she will be getting to race close together for the first time and if she can repeat or build on her most recent which came at this price level, she will be right there at the finish.

Temperant Lady

Will be making her first local start in her third of the year; she is going to have to do better than she has in her prior starts at various venues; while her third could be her best, she still has a ways to go; others more likely.

Feu Green

Has done most of her racing on the fair circuit and she has had some success there; the big question is how well can she run at this venue and this company; "the answer, my friend, is ... "; she could be fast enough and she has positional speed and she seems to run well and according to her backing more often than not; factor if ready.

Successful Pick

Lots of starts and no really good races to recommend her; she has often lost in this class too; that makes her an easy elimination.

Diplomatic Kat

Now many of these have to start to ration their speed and it is no matter of as fast as you can for as far as you can; getting a clear lead could be important; he has shown some grit and determination and will regard him as one to keep in the mix; it has been a while since he has run, but he could also improve with time as young runners do, and the rail might be advantageous with the positional speed.

Anything You Candu

He has a two-turn win in the slop on the front; there is still a lot to learn about him; he will have many friends near the front and how he handles pressure will likely determine how long he stays around today; leaning to others.

Feu's Bebe

Filly is in against males and she has been the trip several times in stakes company; the younger they are the greater the edge to the female gender but she might find that she will have her hands full with these; she fits, especially if playing the exotics, but she does not hold the edge that we like fillies to have to play them against males and her last race form is not great; hoping she is bet down so that she makes value in other places.

Java Jasmine

Form started tom get better when she started running two turns and she finally was able to leave the maiden ranks last time; the pace was slow and as a front runner she is the easiest of eliminations as she is going to find the early proceedings much to aggressive; if she can run from behind, we might be tearing up our tickets.

All About Me

Was out and going and found that what worked at one turn does not always work going farther; he has the speed to develop and adjust and back in with claimers should be given a chance after some solid interim preparation.

Miss Naab

Won her only start in a shorty and was tepid on the tote against males; she is stepping up and she had plenty of speed then and with the nice interim works could well handle the extra turn and the male company once again; she may not have the best of trips in this match up and she may have to show her competitive qualities if she is to win; can watch her or bet on her; at 6-1 we know we find her of interest.

Has already beaten winners and has one-turn wins at Emd at 5F and 6F; he can track the pace and run and he has handled the fast pace there too; hard to know just how he will adjust, but he is a likely fit with these.

5th Hastings

Chi Chi La Mombo

Consistency is not a basic feature with these and figuring who will show up is often the key; her latest was somewhat better and the move to the inside could lead to an easier trip; she will probably need a lot of things to break in her favor if she is to be successful at this shorter distance; others preferred.

A Touch Of Heather

Would have to think that that id the sophomore can repeat her latest that she will not stay in this condition very long; she has the speed to perhaps get the lead, though not without pressure, and she looks as if she does she will be able to carry on; the fact that she will run from behind and is in good form are additional pluses; Lasix seems to be a positive for her performance; contender, but she could be vulnerable too.

River's Run

Has numerous starts and has a win in this condition earlier this year; the faster paces seem to have negative effects on overall performance; because of the pace question, we like others more.

Ran a good front-end effort in this class last time but tired late to yield the top spot; she is in sharp form at this time and has fewer starts than most of the others; she is the most consistent trier in the mix and will have to be dealt with; the best of these to build a multiple exotic around.

Belle 'n' Blue

She still seeks win number three after 35 starts; she can run from behind a fast pace and is thus a possibility to make the ticket, but would see her as less than likely to get the win.

Tiny Slipper

Was in at the bottom last time to win her second and will try this condition for the first time; that was close to her best race and she did overcome a fast and relevant pace; hard to call her to repeat, but she could.

Sophomore has two much improved races in her latest couple and would look really tough in here on a repeat of either of those; whether she can get the trip from the outside and against a possibly faster pace is an uncertainty, but she is seen as one of the prime win contenders with improving sophomores the ever dangerous.

-Steve Zacks

6th Hastings

Mister Cy

With the drop he should be one of the prime players in here from the rail and with a couple of good recent races under his belt; contender.

Is stepping up off a three-race win streak and he will need better than he has been running to defeat some of the droppers but he will get another nice trip and it is a question of what he can do from the quarter pole to the wire which is where he has been winning his races; contender and he might just be a decent price.

Lord Harry

Is taking a drop and has improved since the claim and the layoff; he will be in the hunt early but this will not be an easy pace contest either; he won here earlier last year and a return to better form would help, though the pace trip makes him very questionable, unless he changes styles.

Free and Bold

Has the kind of record a win bettor appreciates but generally has been well situated where he is productive with his good efforts; rates as a contender after the solid interim work.

Stormin to Victory

Has yet to win this campaign but has been second on five occasions; he fits here as a money prospect but the recent reclaim will have his hands full in terms of the win unless he comes up with something different this time.

Ocean Locater

Has been unable to win the last two seasons while sharing half the time; he is stepping up he is seen as less than likely though he has a nice work runs well from outer posts and is very relevant with his better races of this year and last; money chance for sure.

7th Hastings

Receiver General

Is still searching for his first win of the season but he has a number of big efforts this year - he just hasn't been on the winning end of some photos; he has been chasing 'Nelson around in recent starts and that one might have to go a bit faster on the pace with 'Jeremy in the field; a speed duel could help this guy break through; don't ignore.

Lord Nelson

Goes for his 4th consecutive stakes win and he has beaten most of these in recent starts; his speed is his best weapon but the last time he hooked up with 'Jeremy, he tracked that one before putting him away; very strong again.

Devil Will Do Ya

Two-time winner was back in stakes company for his latest and had an even effort behind Lord Nelson and company but it doesn't appear that he has shown any recent signs that he could upset this group; he continues to pick up minor shares and a similar result is likely.

Kid Katabatic

Hometown hero returns to his base track for the first time this season and he's had a rough time in 2001 in trying to get his top form going; old-timer has all kinds of back class but his recent form is a concern; he exits a tough event at Emerald and the 3rd place finisher was a big winner again last weekend; maybe the change in scenery will perk him up.

King Jeremy

Has racked up 2 stakes wins this year and has an interesting rivalry going with 'Nelson, whom he beat in May but that rival turned the tables on him in the Hong Kong race in July; he comes off a handy score in the 'Speed 'Cap at a sprint distance and he certainly appears to be better at shorter distances rather than longer trips.

Mt. Ouray

Was back at this track in July and he parlayed a sprint prep race into an even effort in the Randall Plate behind 'Nelson and 'Secretary; two-time winner has some work to do to beat the top ones in this field but he could argue for a purse share again.

Colonial Secretary

Was racing in starter allowances and claiming races earlier this year but he's in top form right now and had his best race last time when he forced Lord Nelson to run a bit harder than perhaps he wanted to; if this 9-year-old can keep that momentum going, he should be a top three contender again.

8th Hastings

Whispering Sage

Most experienced gal in the field tried longer distances recently and had early speed but not a lot of stamina; those events should have her stronger for this turn back in distance and she gets an ideal inside post; for exotics.

Flashed speed in both of her races against slightly tougher maiden claiming types and she was favoured to win her latest; she has a different rider for this first start in a month but remains a major threat.

Welsh Melody

Recent Kamloops winner makes her Hastings debut and she figures to be a pace runner along with Zaskar as she has shown big speed in recent starts; how she handles the slightly tougher competition is a question but she gets an inwardly post and should be considered for exotics.

Streak On Target

Was well bet for her career debut but she broke 8th and last in the field and was outrun; she was involved in her latest earlier but faded and that leaves her with work to do.

Come Spring

Hesitated at the start of her debut race so she essentially starts over again after the layoff; her recent workouts have been speed but there was not a gate prep evident at time of writing; needs another?

Follow That Dream

Got a clear lead last time and that helped her lead until the stretch when she was overtaken; she has had a lot of chances but that last effort is encouraging; the bad news" there are other pace runners to her inside.

Platinum Chaos

Added blinkers recently and she had a good outing the first time with that equipment but a wide trip led to a poor outing last time; her rider has left her for 'Melody.

Dixie Rose Lee

Drew the rail for her debut and broke a bit behind the majority of the field and she closed only mildly; you can chalk that race up to inexperience and expect that she should improve 2nd time out; she has a different rider as Skelly is aboard 'Target; work her into exotics.

Tumbles to a new low level and will likely take betting support because of the drop; she flashed speed again in her latest as the favorite but the end result was disappointing; she has a wide post and other speed to worry about so that somewhat tempers enthusiasm about calling her a likely winner.
