Cloninger out with broken leg

Jockey Weldon Cloninger Jr. is expected to miss the remainder of the Retama Park meet after fracturing his leg in two places in a starting gate accident Saturday night. Cloninger was named to ride three horses Wednesday night at the San Antonio-area track, which is in the middle of a Thoroughbred meet that runs through Oct. 26.

Cloninger was injured when his mount in the fourth race, Wildess, became cast in the gate before the start of a two-turn turf race for fillies. The rider was having a strong meet at Retama, where he had won 32 races through Saturday to rank third in the standings behind leader Roman Chapa.

Last year, Cloninger finished ninth in the final standings at Retama.
