Clocker's Report 4/25: 'Glory' finishes so-so

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A forecast of rain in the Louisville area over the weekend helped liven up Friday's activities at Churchill Downs as trainer Louis Roussel III opted to move Recapturetheglory's work forward 24 hours to avoid potential complications from the weather.

The Illinois Derby winner Recapturetheglory and Anak Nakal were the only two Kentucky Derby candidates to work over a racetrack that was arguably a trifle cuppier and slower than the previous two mornings.

Recapturetheglory (five furlongs in 1:00.98) - It was obvious the moment Recapturetheglory stepped onto the racetrack immediately after the renovation break that he was going to do something much more serious than originally scheduled. With jockey E.T. Baird aboard and sans some of the usual equipment he regularly trains in, Recapturetheglory barely jogged to the finish line before reversing direction and heading towards the five-furlong pole, where he broke off in full stride.

Once under way, Recapturetheglory settled into a nice early rhythm, cutting out quarter-mile fractions of 11.85 and 23.97 seconds, then picked up the pace without urging approaching the quarter pole to complete his opening three-eighths in 35.46. Switching leads on cue upon turning down the long stretch, Recapturetheglory remained strong through the eighth pole before beginning to tire some nearing the wire, completing his final furlong in just 13.32 before galloping out three-quarter's of a mile in a somewhat lackluster 1:15.01.

AnakNakal (four furlongs in 46.52 seconds) - Anak Nakal, working with Aquarian, was well in hand when breaking off outside his stablemate at the half-mile pole. The pair went a reserved opening furlong in 12.16, but Anak Nakal began to accelerate noticeably and without further urging from exercise rider Megan Smillie nearing the quarter pole, readily pulling away from his company after posting intermediate eighths of 11 and 11.43 seconds into and through early stretch. Anak Nakal remained on his left lead until inside the sixteenth pole, where he switched back abruptly and displayed somewhat wide action to the wire, carrying on well enough despite the fast pace to complete his final furlong in under 12 seconds and galloping out five-eighths in 1:00.22.

Unfortunatel,y whatever satisfaction trainer Nick Zito might have derived from Anak Nakal's final Derby drill was immediately tempered by the fact Aquarian had broken down after completing his work.

After not observing Pyro on the racetrack the previous two mornings, it was good to see the Louisiana Derby out for an easy, one\-mile gallop at 6:15 a.m., during which he showed no visible effects from either his disappointing performance in the Blue Grass Stakes or last weekend's workout at Keeneland. He was followed about an hour later by stablemate Z Fortune, who made an awesome physical appearance on the racetrack while galloping a slow mile after visiting the starting gate. Trainer Steve Asmussen also had another noteworthy member of his barn out for a routine gallop this morning, the reigning Horse of the Year and recent Dubai World Cup winner Curlin, who looked every part the champion he is.

Colonel John had another very good morning, his best since arriving at Churchill earlier in the week, galloping an energetic 1 1/2 miles while giving the appearance of wanting to do more as he turned into the backstretch prior to pulling up.

* Awesome Chic and Pure Clan both got in tune-ups for next Friday's Kentucky Oaks. Florida Oaks winner Awesome Chic worked a very slow half mile in 51.21 while Pure Clan zipped five furlongs in 1:00.44, finishing under some mild pressure.
