Class drop helps Sailors Sunset

Sailors Sunset, coming out of a midpack finish in the Grade 3 Perryville at Keeneland last time out, had that class carry him through as he shipped into Turf Paradise on Saturday and went wire to wire in the $40,000 Saguaro Stakes.

Sailors Sunset, owned by Everest Stables and trained by Marcelo Polanco, jumped right out to the lead under Scott Stevens, took heavy pressure in the six-furlong sprint for 3-year-olds, and gamely held on for the half-length win over the hard-charging heavy favorite Smokey Stover.

Sailors Sunset paid $7.80 as the second choice in the field of 10. He ran the distance in a blazing 1:07.75. The winner's share of $24,000 pushed his career earnings to more than $140,000 from 4 wins in 12 starts.

Smokey Stover, the 1-2 favorite, was well back early and finished strongly but just ran out of ground. He was more than five lengths clear of third-finisher Trail This.
