Claiming Crown has 39 entrants in five races; Rapid Transit canceled
By Marcus Hersh

NEW ORLEANS - Only 39 horses have been entered for Saturday’s 13th edition of the Claiming Crown, the lowest total in the event’s history. Just five races, another historic low, will comprise this year’s Claiming Crown after a sixth scheduled race, the $75,000 Rapid Transit - which drew only five pre-entrants - failed to attract enough entries to make it onto Saturday’s program.
The Claiming Crown races are scattered across a 13-race program at Fair Grounds, which is hosting the event for the first time. Race 4, the Iron Horse, drew seven entrants, while race 5, the Express, has nine. Race 7, the Glass Slipper, also has nine entrants but includes a three-horse coupling. Race 8, the $100,000 Emerald, has an eight-horse field, while the $150,000 Jewel drew six entrants but only five betting interests, with El Muhtasib and Isthmus coupled in the wagering.

READ THE SIGNS had a useful tightener first time out, finishing evenly in a sprint and winding up just three lengths behind the runner-up, while earning this group's best last-out Beyer; stretches out from favorable post and drops in with New York-bred fillies and mares that are combined 0 for 90. MOMMY'S DEAREST was clear thru 6fs in slow 1:17, led to deep stretch before finally being run down by Tropical Jetset, who left maiden ranks on the 22nd try; cutting back 70 yards can only help.
