Claimers set up for closers

EmailEDMONTON, Alberta - There are several good betting races on Friday's nine-race card, including the final two: mid-level claiming races at a mile that drew strong, competitive fields.

The eighth race, for $13,000 claimers, drew seven older horses with the former stakes competitor Rey Del Camino looking to make it two straight at this level.

A 4-year-old gelding who was second in the Count Lathum here 13 months ago, Rey Del Camino is a fresh horse making just his fifth start of the season and has back class in his corner.

Rey del Camino, to be ridden by Quincy Welch, can be expected to battle for the early lead with Noble Dane and Exclusive Banker in a race that sets up nicely for mid-pack closer Awesome Devil, who drew the rail with leading rider Rickey Walcott up.

The second half of the late double, a $17,500 claimer with nine older horses entered, also sets up for a closer. Jiffyjimmygee, winner of 2 of his last 3 starts in front-running style, and Eternal Secrecy, a stakes winner dropping a notch off a near miss at the $22,000 level, are expected to set the early pace.

Jiffyjimmygee, 14 for 43 lifetime, drew post 2 with Welch picking up the mount, and Eternal Secrecy, 16 for 66 in his career, breaks just outside his rival with Walcott up.

Jockey Shannon Beauregard opted for mid-pack closer Second Time Clever, who drew post 4 and is in line for an ideal stalking trip.
