Cinema goes to Tiz West

In consecutive starts, Tiz West has evolved from a playful colt whose antics led to a loss to a determined colt with a half-mile run that led to his first graded stakes win.

In Saturday's $147,200 Cinema Handicap at Hollywood Park, Tiz West challenged pacesetter Polonius on the backstretch, and held off threats from Liberian Freighter and Ez Dreamer to win by a nose. Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Tiz West ($8) ran 1 1/8 miles on turf in 1:47.24.

Trainer Richard Mandella fitted Tiz West with a shadow roll for the Cinema after the colt jumped shadows en route to a fourth-place finish in the Grade 3 Will Rogers Stakes on May 17.

In the Cinema, Tiz West's only fault was his eager behavior. He was third for the first half-mile, tracking Polonius and Liberian Freighter and took the lead with a half-mile remaining with a three-wide move.

Liberian Freighter led briefly over Tiz West going into the turn and was one of three horses within a half-length with a quarter-mile remaining. Polonius and Liberian Freighter faded in early stretch when Ez Dreamer rallied from fourth to challenge Tiz West.

Little separated Tiz West and Ez Dreamer in the final furlong. Liberian Freighter was third in the field of five, followed by Robscarvic and Polonius.

Corey Nakatani, who rode Ez Dreamer, lodged an objection against Espinoza, alleging interference on the backstretch. The stewards disallowed it, stating the incident did not affect the order of finish.

Tiz West has won 3 of 7 starts and $229,398 for owner-breeder Gerald Ford's Diamond A Racing Corp.- Steve Andersen
