Churchill Downs: Silver Valley to get tough test in Debutante

Email

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Like many horsemen, Ron Moquett is always on the lookout for new stock to buy on behalf of his clients. His latest private purchase is Silver Valley, a 2-year-old filly who will get a stern test for class Saturday night at Churchill Downs when she runs under new colors in the $100,000 Debutante Stakes.

“I saw her break her maiden at Lone Star Park and just made a phone call,” said Moquett, who bought Silver Valley for owner Ted Bowman.

Silver Valley is one of 11 fillies entered in the six-furlong Debutante, for which entries were drawn Wednesday. A daughter of Silver Train, she was a 4 3/4-length winner in her May 25 debut for prior connections and has had two Churchill works since Moquett bought her.

“I’ve been very impressed with how smart she is and how cool she is under pressure,” he said. “It seems like she’ll sit chilly and do what you ask. Plenty of horses win first out by a bunch when they pretty much overpower their fields. A lot of running styles might be the same in here, so maybe we’ll have some luck roll our way.”

More Than Beauty, Teardrop, and Fiftyshadesofgold look like the probable favorites in the Debutante, which marks the first stakes of note in the division this year.

From the rail, this is the field for the 113th Debutante: Mi Perlita, Silver Valley, Richies Sweetheart, Yokohama Mama, Medalbu, Deliver, More Than Beauty, Teardrop, Del Mar Holiday, Fiftyshadesofgold, and Sara Bay.

The Debutante is the seventh of 11 races on a Downs After Dark program with a “Boots, Brew, and BBQ” theme. First post is 6 p.m. Eastern, with the Debutante set for 9:05. The program also includes an overnight stakes for filly-mare sprinters, the $65,000 Roxelana (race 10), and three allowances.

The male counterpart to the Debutante, the Grade 3 Bashford Manor, will be run the following Saturday, June 29, also at night.
