Churchill Downs: My Miss Aurelia has first breeze since returning to Asmussen's stable

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – My Miss Aurelia, the undefeated champion 2-year-old filly of 2011, had her first breeze since returning to the care of trainer Steve Asmussen when going an easy three furlongs Friday morning in 39.20 seconds at Churchill Downs.

My Miss Aurelia has not raced since capping off her 4-for-4 season with a victory here last fall in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

“We don’t have any agenda with her right now, other than to get her back into top shape and ready to run,” said Asmussen.

Owned by Stonestreet Stables and George Bolton, My Miss Aurelia was sidelined shortly after her BC victory with a shin injury. Given sufficient time to heal, the daughter of Smart Strike returned to light training in March at the Vinery near Ocala, Fla., where she had two easy three-furlong breezes before being vanned to Churchill last weekend.

Asmussen said he has been pleased with how My Miss Aurelia looks and is moving, and that he intends to continue a normal schedule of galloping with intermittent works of progressive length. My Miss Aurelia will be among the sizable string that Asmussen will take to the Saratoga meet that begins July 20.

I have no interest in a horse that races 4x in over a year..... Can't make any money there, Marty. THIS is the problem with racing.

Steve, I agree it is the BIGGEST problem with racing, but as 2 year old I agree with a light schedule. Having said that I do agree with a light 2 year old season, this is yet another potential superstar that has injury problems. Personally I was looking forward to watching this horse at 3, but suprise she's not healthy. I want to see great athletes compete and bet a few dollars, but the great athletes that do get produced are either hurt or retired or both. The breed needs stipulations put in place regarding sires ( a miniumium of 15 starts before being able to breed, just as an example) to produce a sturdier animal...... it's Time for significant changes to take place in this sport....frankly I am both suprsied disappointed that it has gotten to this point but changes are still possible and are definitely necessary.
