Groupie Doll, winner of the Grade 1 Vinery Madison at Keeneland when equipped with blinkers for the first time in her last start, worked a half-mile Friday morning at Churchill Downs in 47 seconds in tuning up for her next race, the Grade 1 Humana Distaff on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Former jockey Larry Melancon was aboard for the breeze.
“I really liked the way she went,” said trainer Buff Bradley. “Larry said he never moved on her, that she did everything right. That’s about all she’ll need off that last race.”
Bradley said he “hadn’t even worried yet” about the opposition in the $300,000 Distaff, which goes at seven furlongs, the same distance as the Madison. Among the others expected are this trio of 5-year-old mares, all of them highly regarded in the filly-mare sprint division: reigning Eclipse champion, Musical Romance, who was fourth as the favorite in the April 12 Madison; Switch, the John Sadler-trained mare who will be making her first start since finishing second to Musical Romance here in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint last November; and Sassy Image, the reigning Humana Distaff champion for Dale Romans.

Runner-up in the Santa Anita Oaks, IOTAPA drops in class and shortens to a sprint with sharp recent works on the BHP surface. Oaks winner Beholder returned to finish second in the Kentucky Oaks; Oaks third Fiftyshadesofhay was one of the favorites Friday in the Black Eyed Susan at Pimlico. The point is, IOTAPA faced a good bunch last out. She specifically targeted this race, gets pace to run at, loves the track, and can mow them down as the favorite. She must catch two good front-runners.
