Churchill Downs: Groupie Doll in light training

Groupie Doll has been jogging two miles a day for trainer Buff Bradley.

Groupie Doll, the 2012 Eclipse Award winner for filly-mare sprinter, is still weeks away from her first breeze, said trainer Buff Bradley. The 5-year-old mare returned to training early this month at Churchill after almost three months’ rest on Bradley’s farm in Frankfort, Ky.

“She’s just been jogging two miles a day,” said Bradley. “She’ll do that for another week, then start galloping. So we’re still about a month or so away from breezing.”

Groupie Doll is unraced since late November, when she was beaten a nose in the Cigar Mile. Bradley hopes to have her back for a title defense in the Nov. 1 Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita.

◗ Sweet Cassiopeia came out of her disappointing sixth-place finish in the The Very One Stakes at Pimlico in good shape, said trainer Bill Connelly.

“She had trouble getting around that course,” said Connelly. “We haven’t lost any faith in her. We’ll talk about what’s next for her.”

Sweet Cassiopeia had a five-race win streak snapped when never a factor as the 2-1 favorite in the five-furlong turf race on Preakness eve. Connelly has said the Presque Isle Downs Masters in September is a future possibility for the 5-year-old mare.
