Chief Jafatica aims for second straight stakes win

Chief Jafatica bids for his second stakes victory Sunday when he heads a field of nine Oregon-bred 2-year-olds in the $20,000 Bill Wineberg at six furlongs at Portland Meadows.

Also on the card, a field of four Oregon-bred fillies will be making their stakes debuts in the $20,000 Janet Wineberg at six furlongs.

Chief Jafatica, a $3,000 yearling buy last year, has hit the board in all five career starts, scoring his first victory in the OTBA Sales Stakes at Portland Meadows in his last start on Oct. 19. He was third in the Chis Christian Stakes at Boise on July 5.

Chief Jafatica, a Tiffany Ice gelding owned by D.H. Walker, has shown speed in both starts here. An even-money favorite in the OTBA, he edged clear in the lane and won by a length.

Mazama, fourth in that race in his debut, is also entered.

Ex Tremely Cool, a $12,500 maiden winner in his second start at Emerald Downs in June, is the only other winner in the Bill Wineberg field, which also has four first-time starters, including Beacon Rock and Onetwofreego from the barn of Nick Lowe, who is second in the trainer standings behind Jerry Hollendorfer.
